How can we apply perseverance when "the wind did not allow us"? Setting the Scene: Paul Against the Wind “After sailing slowly for many days and with great difficulty, we arrived off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to keep our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.” (Acts 27:7) • Luke records a literal voyage: real ship, real wind, real delay. • Paul’s destination—Rome—remained certain, yet progress felt agonizingly slow. Recognizing Today’s Headwinds • Health setbacks that drain strength • Financial strain that stalls plans • Relational conflict that diverts focus • Spiritual dryness that muffles joy Unfavorable winds rarely announce themselves; they simply push against forward motion. Assurance of God’s Sovereignty • “For this very night an angel of God… said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before Caesar.’” (Acts 27:23-24) • “We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him…” (Romans 8:28) • Even when progress crawls, the course God sets is never canceled. Lessons Drawn from Paul’s Response • He adjusted his tactics without abandoning his mission. (v. 7: “we sailed to the lee of Crete”) • He stayed in fellowship; Luke and Aristarchus were at his side (27:2). • He trusted revelation over circumstance; the angel’s word outranked contrary wind. • He encouraged others, eventually breaking bread and giving thanks amid the storm (27:35). Practical Ways to Persevere • Anchor expectations to scriptural promises, not to immediate results. • Embrace small advances; “slow headway” is still headway. • Seek godly companions who remind of truth when emotions sway. • Keep serving; Paul ministered to crew and prisoners even as a captive himself. • Speak gratitude aloud; thanksgiving shifts focus from gusts to God. Scriptures that Fuel Endurance • James 1:2-4 — Trials grow “steadfastness” that matures faith. • Hebrews 12:1-3 — Run with endurance, “fixing our eyes on Jesus.” • Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not grow weary in well-doing.” • 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 — “Pressed… but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair.” • Isaiah 40:31 — “Those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength.” Witness Formed in the Storm • Perseverance under pressure displayed Christ to 275 shipmates. • When deliverance came, God—not favorable weather—received the glory. • Steady faith amid resistance convinces observers that the gospel is true. Awaiting Safe Harbor • The Lord who carried Paul through Crete’s headwinds still carries His people. • Each resisted gust testifies: God’s plan holds; His timing stands; His child will arrive. |
