How to pray for non-believing nations?
In what ways can we pray for nations that do not acknowledge God?

Recognizing the Heart of the Passage

Psalm 79:6

“Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge You, and on the kingdoms that do not call on Your name.”

This cry from Asaph arises amid devastation. God’s people have been ravaged, and the psalmist pleads for justice. Yet the verse also gives us a framework for intercession: nations need to “acknowledge” the Lord and “call on” His name. When they do not, judgment follows. Our prayers, therefore, seek mercy that leads to repentance before wrath must fall.

Praying for Nations to Acknowledge God

• Ask for conviction of sin

John 16:8 tells us the Spirit “will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment.” Pray the Spirit pierces consciences—from citizens to leaders—so they grasp their guilt before a holy God.

• Appeal for revelation of truth

2 Corinthians 4:4 notes that “the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers.” Intercede that the veil be lifted and the light of Christ shine into cultural mindsets, educational systems, and media outlets.

• Request open doors for the gospel

Colossians 4:3 urges, “that God may open to us a door for the word.” Pray specifically for missionaries, local believers, and digital outreach to gain unhindered access to hearts otherwise closed.

• Pray for godly leadership and just laws

1 Timothy 2:1-4 commands prayers “for kings and all in authority” so people may live “peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness.” Ask God to raise leaders who value righteousness, defend the vulnerable, and restrain evil, creating space for the gospel to flourish.

Praying for Nations to Call on His Name

• Cry out for a spirit of repentance

Acts 2:37-38 shows crowds cut to the heart, asking, “What shall we do?” Pray whole populations sense that urgency, turning from idols and self-reliance to the living God.

• Intercede for widespread worship of Jesus

Malachi 1:11 promises, “In every place incense and pure offerings will be presented to My name.” Petition that churches be planted, Scripture be translated, and praise arise from every tongue.

• Ask for transformative revival

2 Chronicles 7:14 gives the pattern: humility, prayer, seeking God’s face, and turning from wicked ways. Plead for genuine revival—not mere religion—that reforms families, economies, and public morality.

Balancing Mercy and Justice

• Thank God for His patience

2 Peter 3:9 declares He is “patient… not wanting anyone to perish.” Acknowledge His longsuffering even toward rebellious nations.

• Invoke righteous judgment when evil persists

Revelation 6:10 records martyrs crying, “How long, O Lord… until You judge?” Where oppression and violence flourish, pray God restrains and, if necessary, judges wicked regimes, while still desiring their salvation.

Standing on Promises

Psalm 22:27 — “All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD.”

Isaiah 45:22 — “Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.”

Habakkuk 2:14 — “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”

Hold these promises before the throne, trusting that every plea aligns with God’s revealed intent to make Jesus known among all peoples.
