How to prevent deception like Joshua?
What steps can we take to avoid being deceived like Joshua was?

Setting the Scene

“ ‘We are your servants,’ they replied to Joshua.” (Joshua 9:8)

The Gibeonites’ humble-sounding words masked a calculated ruse. Joshua’s treaty with them could not be undone, and Israel lived with the consequences. Their story gives us a road map for guarding our own hearts from deception.

Why Joshua Was Deceived

• He trusted appearances (worn sandals, moldy bread) over discernment.

• He relied on human reasoning instead of divine direction: “The men of Israel sampled their provisions, but did not seek the counsel of the LORD.” (Joshua 9:14)

• He acted quickly, without testing the story or waiting on God.

Steps to Avoid Deception Today

• Seek God’s counsel first

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

James 1:5 encourages us to ask for wisdom; God “gives generously to all without finding fault.”

• Test everything against Scripture

1 John 4:1: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.”

Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

– If a claim contradicts clear biblical teaching, reject it—no matter how persuasive the messenger.

• Refuse to rush important decisions

Proverbs 19:2: “Whoever hurries his footsteps misses the mark.”

Isaiah 28:16: “He who believes will not act hastily.”

– Pausing creates space for prayer, counsel, and a cooling-off period where lies often unravel.

• Invite godly accountability

Proverbs 11:14: “For lack of guidance, a nation falls, but with many counselors there is deliverance.”

– Christian friends, elders, or mentors can spot red flags we overlook.

• Rely on the Holy Spirit’s discernment

John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

– Regular fellowship with the Spirit through Scripture and obedience sharpens our ability to recognize truth from error.

Putting It Into Practice

Slow down, pray first, weigh claims by the Word, involve trusted believers, and lean on the Spirit’s guidance. These simple, intentional habits will guard us from the kind of deception that trapped Joshua—leading us instead into clear, confident obedience.
