How to remember God in abundance?
How can we avoid forgetting God when experiencing abundance, as in Deuteronomy 6:10?

Setting the Scene

“When the LORD your God brings you into the land He swore to give your fathers—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give you a land with large, beautiful cities you did not build…” (Deuteronomy 6:10). The passage anticipates vineyards, wells, houses, and every kind of plenty. The danger comes in verse 12: “be careful not to forget the LORD.” Abundance is a blessing, yet it can dull spiritual memory if left unchecked.

Why Plenty Makes Forgetting Easy

• Comfort reduces the felt need to cry out to God.

• Achievements tempt us to claim credit—“my power and the strength of my hands” (Deuteronomy 8:17).

• Distractions multiply, crowding out time for worship and the Word.

God’s Built-In Safeguards (Deuteronomy 6:13-17)

1. Fear and serve the LORD only—maintain awe, not casual familiarity.

2. Swear by His name—not by idols—keeping allegiance public and verbal.

3. Do not test the LORD—stay obedient rather than demanding proof.

4. Diligently keep His commands—consistent practice cements memory.

Practical Habits for Today

• Celebrate God before enjoying the gift. Pause to thank Him aloud over each meal, paycheck, or achievement (Psalm 103:2).

• Keep firstfruits flowing. Set aside the tithe or another fixed portion so giving remains a reflex (Proverbs 3:9-10; Malachi 3:10).

• Maintain Sabbath rhythms—weekly worship and rest remind heart and calendar who rules time and resources (Exodus 20:8-11).

• Tell the story. Share testimonies of God’s provision with family and friends; verbal repetition keeps memory alive (Deuteronomy 6:20-25).

• Hold possessions loosely. Regularly declutter, donate, and bless others to resist hoarding (1 Timothy 6:17-19).

• Memorize abundance warnings—Deuteronomy 8:10-18; Proverbs 30:8-9; Luke 12:15-21—and recite them whenever success arrives.

• Redirect praise. When complimented, promptly acknowledge God’s role, echoing Paul: “By the grace of God I am what I am” (1 Corinthians 15:10).

Additional Scriptural Anchors

James 1:17—“Every good and perfect gift is from above.”

Psalm 62:10—“Though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.”

Colossians 3:2—“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Recap to Live Out

Remembering God in abundance is not automatic; it is cultivated. Build gratitude, giving, rest, storytelling, scripture memory, and humble speech into daily life, and abundance will serve as a constant reminder of the Giver rather than a reason to forget Him.
