How can we apply the centurion's approach to seeking Jesus in our lives? Listening That Leads to Action Luke 7:3: “When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to ask Him to come and heal his servant.” • He didn’t delay. Truth was received, and a step was taken. • Romans 10:17—“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” • Application: When Scripture or testimony reveals who Jesus is, respond promptly—confess sin, obey a prompting, share the gospel. Seeking Jesus with Humble Boldness • The centurion believed Jesus would answer, yet he stayed in the background (vv. 6–7). • Hebrews 4:16—“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence.” • James 4:10—“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.” • Hold these together: confidence in Christ’s compassion, humility about our unworthiness. Interceding for Others • His request was for a valued servant, not himself (v. 2). • 1 Timothy 2:1—“I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions…be made for all people.” • Practical pattern: Identify someone in need, bring that need to Jesus daily, expect Him to work. Trusting His Authority, Not Our Merit • Luke 7:7—“Say the word, and my servant will be healed.” • Matthew 28:18—“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” • Rest the outcome on Christ’s power, not on personal worthiness, religious performance, or eloquence. Crossing Barriers for the Sake of the Gospel • A Gentile sought help from a Jewish Rabbi through Jewish elders—social walls came down. • Ephesians 2:14—“He Himself is our peace…has broken down the dividing wall.” • Application: Initiate relationships across cultural, racial, or denominational lines to bring people to Jesus. Practical Steps for Today 1. Set aside time daily to “hear about Jesus” through Scripture reading; act on the first truth the Spirit highlights. 2. Keep a prayer list focused on others’ needs; approach Christ confidently yet humbly. 3. When faced with a problem, speak Scripture over it, acknowledging His sovereign authority. 4. Serve someone outside your usual circle this week, showing gospel-driven love. 5. Share a testimony of Christ’s faithfulness, fueling faith in those who “hear” just as the centurion once did. |
