How to seek leaders' guidance today?
How can we apply the principle of seeking guidance from leaders today?

Setting the Scene at Sinai

“ He said to the elders, ‘Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute can go to them.’ ” Exodus 24:14

Moses ascended the mountain to meet with God. He left clear instructions: while he was gone, the community was to seek guidance from leaders God had already provided—Aaron and Hur.

Timeless Principle: God Provides Human Leadership

• Scripture consistently shows the Lord appointing trustworthy individuals to give direction (Numbers 27:18–20; Acts 6:3–6).

• God’s people thrive when they honor those appointments (1 Thessalonians 5:12–13).

• Leadership is never a replacement for God’s voice but a channel God often uses (Ephesians 4:11–12).

Why Seek Guidance from God-Appointed Leaders Today

• Protection from blind spots—“Where there is no guidance, a people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Proverbs 11:14

• Confirmation of God’s will—“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22

• Accountability that strengthens obedience—“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account.” Hebrews 13:17

• Shared wisdom formed by Scripture, experience, and spiritual gifting (Romans 12:6–8).

How to Seek Guidance Wisely

1. Identify leaders whose lives and doctrine align with Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Titus 1:9).

2. Come with a humble, teachable heart, ready to listen before speaking (James 1:19).

3. Present the matter clearly and honestly; partial information hinders godly counsel.

4. Compare any advice to the written Word; Scripture remains the final authority (Acts 17:11).

5. Pray over the counsel received and move forward in faith, not paralysis (Philippians 4:6–7).

Heart Attitudes That Keep Guidance Healthy

• Submission to God’s ultimate rule

• Respect for leaders without idolizing them

• Willingness to be corrected

• Commitment to unity and peace within the body (Ephesians 4:3)

Responsibilities of Leaders in Giving Guidance

• Stay anchored in the literal, inerrant Word (2 Timothy 4:2).

• Seek the Holy Spirit in prayer before advising (John 16:13).

• Speak truth lovingly, avoiding personal agendas (Ephesians 4:15).

• Model the obedience they urge in others (1 Peter 5:2–3).

Guardrails to Prevent Misuse

• No counsel may contradict Scripture.

• Guidance never coerces; it persuades through truth.

• Every believer retains direct access to God in Christ (Hebrews 4:16).

• Collective discernment (plurality of counselors) protects against error.

Living the Principle This Week

• Invite pastoral or elder input on a pending decision.

• Reexamine previous counsel in light of God’s Word.

• Thank the leaders God has placed in your life and support them in prayer.
