How to serve others until Christ forms?
How can we labor for others until Christ is formed in them?

The Burning Heart of Paul—Galatians 4:19

“My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you” (Galatians 4:19). Paul’s language is vivid, parental, and sacrificial. He is not content until the life, character, and likeness of Jesus flourish inside those he loves.

Understanding “Labor”—More Than Human Effort

To “labor” (Greek: ὠδίνω, odinō) paints the picture of a mother in labor. It involves:

• Deep personal cost—time, energy, tears.

• Ongoing persistence—“again” hints at repeated effort.

• A goal beyond conversion—formation, maturity, Christlikeness.

Colossians 1:28–29 echoes the same heartbeat: “For this purpose I also labor, striving with all His energy that so powerfully works in me”. Our labor draws on His power, not merely our own resolve.

Practical Ways to Labor for Others

1. Intercede Unceasingly

• “Always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers” (Colossians 4:12).

• Set names before God daily, asking that His Spirit shape them into Christ’s image.

2. Teach Truth Clearly

• “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

• Open Scripture together, explain, illustrate, and apply. Saturate conversations with the Word.

3. Model the Life You’re Urging

• “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

• Let patience, humility, and holiness be visible. People catch what you live more than what you say.

4. Speak the Truth in Love

• “Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself” (Ephesians 4:15).

• Offer gentle correction when needed, and pour encouragement liberally.

5. Walk Beside, Not Above

• “We were gentle among you, like a nursing mother caring for her children” (1 Thessalonians 2:7).

• Share life: meals, struggles, celebrations. Presence nurtures formation.

6. Celebrate Progress, However Small

Philippians 1:6 assures us He will finish what He starts.

• Recognize and rejoice over each evidence of Christ’s work in them.

Guarding Our Own Hearts While We Labor

• Depend on the Spirit’s power—Galatians 3:3 warns against beginning in the Spirit and finishing in the flesh.

• Keep personal communion with Christ vibrant; lifeless leaders cannot form living disciples.

• Remember the goal is Christ’s image, not clones of ourselves.

The Joyful Outcome—Christ Formed in Them

When Christ is formed:

• Love overflows (John 13:35).

• Unity deepens (Ephesians 4:13).

• Mission advances (Acts 1:8).

Our labor finds its reward as we watch others mirror the Savior, carrying His presence into every corner of life.
