How to show commitment to Christ?
In what ways can we demonstrate commitment to Christ like the disciples did?

Setting the Scene—Luke 5 : 11

“ When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.”

Immediate Response—Act When He Calls

• Peter, James, and John did not delay.

Mark 1 : 18—“At once they left their nets and followed Him.”

• Commitment today: obey promptly when Scripture or the Holy Spirit makes the next step clear—whether that means ending a sinful habit, starting a ministry, or reconciling a relationship.

Total Surrender—Holding Nothing Back

• “They left everything.”

• Careers, possessions, long-held plans all went on the altar.

Philippians 3 : 7-8—Paul echoes the same heart: counting “all things as loss… that I may gain Christ.”

• Modern application: open-handed with bank accounts, calendars, talents, and comfort zones.

Putting Christ First—Relational Priorities Reordered

Luke 14 : 26-27—allegiance to Jesus surpasses every earthly tie.

• Family, friendships, even self-interest must take second place to His lordship.

• Commitment shows when we refuse to compromise biblical truth to keep approval or avoid conflict.

Obedience Before Full Understanding

• The miraculous catch (Luke 5 : 4-7) happened because Peter pushed out “at Your word.”

John 14 : 15—“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

• Practical obedience:

– Forgive as commanded (Ephesians 4 : 32).

– Practice sexual purity (1 Thessalonians 4 : 3-5).

– Give generously (2 Corinthians 9 : 7).

Daily Apprenticeship—Learning and Serving Together

Acts 2 : 42—early believers “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching… fellowship… breaking of bread… prayer.”

• Commitment shows in regular Bible intake, corporate worship, small-group fellowship, and active service.

Bold Witness—Speaking of What We’ve Seen

Acts 4 : 20—“We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

• Share the gospel in conversations, social media, hospitality, and mission trips.

Trusting His Provision—Faith Over Security

• Leaving the nets meant trusting Jesus to meet material needs.

Matthew 6 : 33—“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.”

• Live free from anxiety by prioritizing kingdom work over financial safety nets.

Perseverance—Staying the Course in Trials

1 Peter 4 : 12-13—fiery trials are normal; rejoicing follows.

• Demonstrate commitment by staying faithful when discipleship costs reputation, career advancement, or physical safety.

Living Sent—Fishing for People

Matthew 4 : 19—“I will make you fishers of men.”

Matthew 28 : 19—“Go and make disciples of all nations.”

• Commitment matures into intentional disciple-making: mentoring new believers, planting churches, supporting global missions.

Snapshot Summary—Practices That Echo Luke 5 : 11

• Act immediately on Christ’s directions.

• Surrender possessions, ambitions, and relationships to His lordship.

• Obey even when you don’t grasp the full picture.

• Immerse yourself in Scripture, fellowship, prayer, and service.

• Speak openly about Jesus.

• Trust Him to supply every need.

• Endure hardship with joy.

• Invest your life in making disciples.
