How to show compassion to the "unclean"?
In what ways can we show Christ-like compassion to those considered "unclean" today?

Christ’s Compassion on Display (Mark 1:41)

“Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ He said. ‘Be clean!’”

Identifying Today’s “Unclean”

• People struggling with addiction or homelessness

• Those living with stigmatized illnesses (HIV/AIDS, mental disorders)

• Former inmates and those with criminal records

• Refugees, immigrants, and ethnic minorities facing prejudice

• The socially awkward, chronically lonely, or bullied

• Anyone society labels as “other,” “dangerous,” or “hopeless”

How Jesus Treated the Unclean—A Quick Snapshot

• He noticed the man before Him

• He felt genuine compassion

• He crossed the cultural line and touched him

• He spoke hope: “I am willing”

• He met the deepest need: cleansing and restoration

• He sent the healed man back into community (v. 43–44)

Practical Ways to Mirror Christ’s Compassion Today

• Close the distance

– Sit beside, shake hands, share a meal; physical nearness communicates dignity

• Listen without recoil

– Let stories flow before offering solutions; “Everyone should be quick to listen” (James 1:19)

• Speak life-giving words

– Affirm worth: “You matter to God and to me”

• Meet tangible needs

– Food, transportation, medical help, job referrals, childcare

• Offer your skills

– Budget coaching, résumé help, language tutoring, legal advice

• Welcome into community

– Invite to small groups, church services, family dinners; break isolation

• Advocate when they’re voiceless

– Write referrals, accompany to court or appointments, challenge unfair policies

• Share the gospel naturally

– Present Christ as the One who cleanses and restores; He is the ultimate hope

• Persevere in relationship

– Compassion is not a one-time event; keep showing up

Scriptural Anchors for Compassionate Action

Matthew 25:40 — serving “the least of these” is serving Christ

James 2:1–4 — refuse favoritism toward the “clean” and respectable

Galatians 6:2 — “Carry one another’s burdens”

1 John 3:17-18 — love expressed in deeds, not talk alone

Romans 15:7 — “Accept one another… just as Christ accepted you”

2 Corinthians 5:18-20 — ambassadors of reconciliation bring outsiders near

Keeping Our Hearts Aligned with His

• Remember how Christ reached you when sin made you spiritually “unclean” (Ephesians 2:1-5)

• Stay anchored in prayerful dependence; compassion without Christ soon runs dry

• Trust the Holy Spirit to empower courageous, sacrificial love that reflects the Savior’s touch
