How to speak only by God's command?
In what ways can we ensure we speak only when God commands us?

Setting the Scene: Ezekiel’s Example

“But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you will say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says.’ Whoever listens, let him listen; and whoever refuses, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.” (Ezekiel 3:27)

• Ezekiel’s mouth stayed shut until God “opened” it.

• His authority to speak rested entirely on the Lord’s initiative, not on personal impulse or opinion.

Cultivate a Heart Tuned to God’s Voice

• Daily Scripture intake sharpens spiritual hearing (Romans 10:17).

• “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you” (Colossians 3:16)—so His words overflow, not our own.

• Time in quiet worship and reflection readies us to recognize His prompting (Psalm 46:10).

Ground Every Word in Scripture

• God will never command speech that contradicts His written Word (Isaiah 8:20).

• Before speaking, ask: Does this align with clear biblical teaching?

• Memorize key passages so the Spirit can bring them to mind when needed (John 14:26).

Practice Worshipful Silence

• “Be quick to listen, slow to speak” (James 1:19).

Proverbs 17:27–28 reminds us that restraint displays wisdom and understanding.

• Purposeful pauses give space for the Spirit to confirm or check our words.

Seek the Spirit’s Discernment

• The Spirit leads believers into truth (John 16:13).

• Inner conviction, coupled with Scriptural confirmation, often signals His timing to speak.

• Beware of impulses fueled by anger, fear, or pride—fruits of the flesh, not the Spirit (Galatians 5:19-23).

Invite Godly Accountability

• Wise counselors help test whether a message is from the Lord (Proverbs 11:14).

• Elders, mentors, or prayer partners can affirm or caution before we speak publicly.

Speak with Purpose and Clarity

• God’s commands to speak are purposeful—warning, encouragement, instruction, or proclamation (2 Timothy 4:2).

• Avoid needless controversy; focus on what edifies and points to Christ (Ephesians 4:29).

Rest in the Promise of Divine Enablement

• If God commands, He empowers: “Do not worry about how or what you will say…for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.” (Matthew 10:19-20)

• Like Ezekiel, trust that the Lord will “open your mouth” at exactly the right moment.

How does Ezekiel 3:27 connect with James 1:22 about being doers of the word?
