How to spot hypocrites in our community?
In what ways can we discern "hypocrites" in our community or church?

Guiding Passage: Matthew 7:15-20

“Beware of false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves… Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit… So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Observing External Fruit

• Habitual, unrepentant sin that contradicts their public image (1 John 3:9-10)

• Patterns of divisiveness, gossip, or slander rather than peacemaking (Titus 3:10-11)

• A lifestyle centered on self-promotion and worldly gain instead of humble service (3 John 9-10)

• Neglect of basic acts of compassion—helping the needy, visiting the sick, showing hospitality (James 2:14-17)

Listening to Their Words

• Praise for God mixed with consistent criticism or tearing down of others (James 3:9-12)

• Doctrinal statements that subtly deny core biblical truths—watch for “almost right” teaching (Galatians 1:6-9)

• Flattery aimed at gaining influence rather than speaking truth in love (Romans 16:18)

Examining Motives

• Ministry involvement primarily when recognition or advantage is guaranteed (Matthew 6:1-2)

• Generosity accompanied by public display rather than quiet obedience (Matthew 6:3-4)

• Quickness to condemn others while overlooking their own faults (Matthew 7:3-5)

Testing Alignment with Scripture

• Compare their counsel and lifestyle to the plain teaching of Scripture; God’s Word is the final standard (Acts 17:11)

• Refuse to excuse behavior that Scripture clearly labels sin, no matter the person’s charisma or status (Isaiah 8:20)

Watching for Love and Humility

• Genuine believers display enduring love for fellow believers (John 13:35)

• A teachable spirit willing to receive correction (Proverbs 9:8-9)

• Readiness to give God the glory rather than themselves (1 Peter 4:11)

Self-Check: Guarding Against Our Own Hypocrisy

• Regularly invite the Holy Spirit to search and reveal hidden motives (Psalm 139:23-24)

• Practice confession and accountability within trusted fellowship (James 5:16)

• Cultivate the fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23)

Discerning hypocrites is ultimately about comparing consistent character, speech, and motive to the unchanging measure of God’s Word, always remembering that the goal is restoration and purity in Christ’s body rather than condemnation.

How does Psalm 26:4 connect with Proverbs 13:20 on choosing companions wisely?
