How to stay faithful as in Matthew 24?
How can we ensure we remain faithful servants as described in Matthew 24?

Setting the Scene

Matthew 24:45–51 contrasts the “faithful and wise servant” with the “wicked servant.” Verse 49 spotlights the unfaithful one:

“and he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.”

Jesus’ picture is clear: neglect of duty, mistreatment of others, and self-indulgence reveal a heart that has lost sight of the Master’s soon return. Remaining faithful means cultivating the opposite posture.

Recognize the Warning in Matthew 24:49

• Violence toward “fellow servants” → disregard for the body of Christ

• “Eat and drink with drunkards” → surrender to fleshly appetites, lazy watchfulness

• Underlying issue → the servant “says in his heart, ‘My master is staying away a long time’” (v.48)

Faithfulness begins by rejecting the lie that Christ’s return is distant or irrelevant.

Steadfast Habits of a Faithful Servant

1. Stay alert to the Master’s timing

Matthew 24:42 “Therefore keep watch…”

1 Thessalonians 5:6–8 urges sobriety and vigilance.

2. Immerse in Scripture

Psalm 119:11: hiding the Word guards against sin.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 equips “for every good work.”

3. Pray continually

Luke 21:36 “But stay alert at all times, praying…”

• Prayer keeps relationship vibrant and motives pure.

4. Steward gifts faithfully

1 Corinthians 4:2 “Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”

• Use time, talents, and resources for kingdom purposes, not self-indulgence.

5. Practice self-control

Titus 2:11-12 calls grace a tutor “training us…to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives.”

• Avoid patterns of excess that dull spiritual senses.

Cultivating Christlike Relationships

• Serve, don’t strike: Galatians 5:13 “Serve one another in love.”

• Pursue unity: Ephesians 4:3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit.”

• Speak life: Proverbs 18:21 reminds that “death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

Faithful servants build up fellow believers rather than “beat” them down.

Living with Eternal Perspective

• Remember the reward: “Blessed is that servant whom his master finds doing so when he returns.” (Matthew 24:46)

• Consider the consequence: “The master…will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites.” (v.51)

• Keep eyes on Christ: Hebrews 12:2 “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”

Self-examination Checklist

□ Am I daily expecting Christ’s return?

□ Is my treatment of others marked by grace and service?

□ Are my appetites under Spirit-led control?

□ Do my choices steward God’s resources for His glory?

□ Is the Word shaping my thoughts, plans, and priorities?

Faithful servants answer each of these with growing “yes” as they await the Master who could arrive at any moment.
