How to support God's work better?
What steps can we take to support God's work, unlike Succoth's leaders?

Setting the Scene at Succoth

Judges 8:6 records the hesitation of Succoth’s leaders during Gideon’s pursuit of Midian’s kings: “But the leaders of Succoth asked, ‘Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your possession, that we should give bread to your army?’” Their doubt kept them from aiding God’s deliverer at a critical moment. Because every word of Scripture is accurate and trustworthy, their failure stands as a real warning for us today.

Where Succoth Fell Short

• They withheld practical help, even something as basic as bread.

• They demanded proof of victory before investing resources—faithless caution.

• They feared earthly repercussions more than they feared disobeying God.

• Their delay discouraged God’s people when encouragement was most needed.

Steps that Show True Support for God’s Work

• Offer tangible resources immediately

– Food, finances, skills, and time, not merely wishes (James 2:15-17).

• Stand with God’s servants before success is visible

– Faith acts on God’s promise, not on sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

• Encourage through words of faith and affirmation

– “Encourage one another daily” (Hebrews 3:13).

• Share in the burden and the reward

– “For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who remains with the baggage” (1 Samuel 30:24).

• Trust God’s provision while giving generously

– “My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).

• Remain obedient even under potential opposition

– Peter’s example: “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

• Foster partnerships that advance the gospel

– “We ought therefore to support such men, so that we may be fellow workers for the truth” (3 John 8).

Living These Steps Today

• Identify God-honoring ministries and meet a specific need this week.

• Budget for generosity so resources are ready before crises arise.

• Speak faith into challenging situations your church faces instead of voicing doubt.

• Align with believers who pursue God’s mission even when culture disapproves.

• Celebrate testimonies of God’s faithfulness to reinforce collective courage.
