How to support local ministry workers?
What practical steps can we take to support ministry workers in our community?

Taking Our Cues from 2 Kings 4:10

“Please let us build a small room on the roof and furnish it with a bed and a table and a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.”

What We Notice in the Shunammite’s Example

• She perceives a genuine servant of God passing through her town.

• She moves from a meal (v. 8) to permanent provision—escalating generosity.

• She makes ministry easier by supplying four simple things: rest, workspace, light, and privacy.

• Her support is regular—“whenever he comes.” Consistency matters.

Translating the Pattern into Today’s Practical Steps

1. Offer Comfortable Lodging

– Open a guest room, vacation home, or rental property for traveling preachers or missionaries.

– Provide thoughtful touches—fresh linens, a stocked fridge, local information.

2. Provide Nourishing Food

– Arrange meal trains when ministry families face intense seasons.

– Give restaurant gift cards or organize weekly grocery deliveries.

3. Share Financial Resources

– Commit to monthly support for pastors, missionaries, or Christian workers.

– Cover conference fees, continuing‐education costs, or retreat expenses.

4. Equip with Tools and Space

– Donate laptops, study materials, or office furniture.

– Offer a quiet home office or church room for sermon preparation.

5. Give Time and Practical Skills

– Volunteer administrative help, childcare, car maintenance, or tech support.

– Rotate Sunday duties to free pastors for focused prayer and study (Acts 6:2–4).

6. Extend Encouragement

– Send handwritten notes citing specific ways their ministry blessed you.

– Celebrate ministry milestones and birthdays.

7. Protect Their Well-Being

– Encourage regular Sabbath rest; cover the pulpit so they can unplug.

– Provide access to trustworthy counselors or pastoral care networks.

Scriptural Reinforcement

Galatians 6:6—“The one who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches.”

Matthew 10:41–42—Blessing promised for receiving a prophet and giving “a cup of cold water.”

Philippians 4:16–18—Paul calls the Philippians’ gifts “a fragrant offering.”

1 Timothy 5:17–18—“The worker is worthy of his wages.”

Romans 12:13—“Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

Hebrews 13:16—“Do not neglect to do good and to share with others.”

Guarding Our Motives

• Serve “as unto the Lord” (Colossians 3:23), not for recognition.

• Avoid strings attached; support freely, trusting God to reward.

• Pray for workers privately, letting intercession accompany tangible help (Ephesians 6:19).

Why It Matters

• Relieved burdens allow ministry workers to pour out the Word without distraction.

• Hospitality models the gospel’s welcome and strengthens church unity.

• Generosity stores up eternal treasure and witnesses to a watching world (Matthew 6:20).

A simple room with a bed, table, chair, and lamp changed a prophet’s life and influenced a nation. Small, consistent acts today can do the same for those who labor among us.

In what ways can we prioritize God's presence in our daily routines?
