How to use skills in spiritual service?
How can we apply the concept of "skilled work" in our spiritual service?

Focus Verse

“He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or designer or embroiderer … or by a weaver—any workman or skilled designer.” (Exodus 35:35)

What “Skilled Work” Meant Then

• God Himself supplied the ability; it was Spirit-given, not self-generated (Exodus 31:3).

• Skill was practical—wood, gold, thread, stone—yet every stitch and chisel mark was worship.

• The excellence of the craftsmen reflected the excellence of the God who indwelt the tabernacle (Exodus 25:8-9).

Translating the Concept to Our Service

• The New Covenant parallel: “To each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (1 Colossians 12:7).

• Every believer receives a Spirit-instilled capacity—teaching, mercy, administration, hospitality, music, etc. (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Peter 4:10-11).

• God still expects craftsmanship: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

• The goal is God’s dwelling among His people today—the edification of the body (Ephesians 4:12).

Principles for Practicing Spiritual Craftsmanship

• Recognize the Source

– Skills are gifts, not trophies (1 Colossians 4:7).

• Hone the Gift

– Be a “worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Titus 2:15).

• Offer Excellence, Not Perfectionism

– Excellence honors God; perfectionism idolizes self.

• Collaborate

– Bezalel and Oholiab worked in community (Exodus 35:34); so do we (1 Colossians 12:21).

• Keep the End in View

– The tabernacle displayed God’s glory; our service should do the same (Matthew 5:16).

Practical Steps

1. Inventory your Spirit-given abilities—what energizes you and blesses others?

2. Seek mentors or training to sharpen those abilities.

3. Volunteer in a specific ministry setting; let real needs shape your practice.

4. Invite feedback; craftsmanship improves with critique (Proverbs 27:17).

5. Guard your motives—serve “so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 4:11).

Encouragement for the Church Family

• Celebrate diverse skills; each contributes a needed thread.

• Budget for training and tools—invest in people’s God-given craftsmanship.

• Tell the stories of how skilled service has built up the body; testimony fuels gratitude.

• Remember: when Spirit-empowered skill meets willing hearts, God once again “fills the house with His glory” (2 Chronicles 5:13-14).
