How to welcome new believers like Barnabas?
How can we emulate Barnabas' actions in welcoming new believers today?

Seeing Barnabas in Action

“But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles, and described how Saul had seen the Lord on the road, and that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Jesus.” — Acts 9:27

In one verse, Barnabas:

• Took initiative to approach Saul

• Vouched for Saul’s genuine faith

• Brought Saul into trusted fellowship

• Told the story of God’s work in Saul

Key Traits to Imitate

• Intentional Welcome – Barnabas “took him.” He didn’t wait for Saul to prove himself.

• Advocacy – He “described” Saul’s encounter with Jesus, standing beside a new believer whose past sparked fear.

• Bridge-Building – He “brought him to the apostles,” opening doors Saul couldn’t open alone.

• Gospel-Centered Testimony – Barnabas focused on what the Lord had done, not on Saul’s résumé.

Practical Steps for Today

• Seek Out the New: Spot those who are new to the congregation and start a conversation before they have to introduce themselves.

• Listen to Their Story: Give room for them to share how Christ met them (James 1:19).

• Speak Up For Them: If others are cautious or unsure, share what you’ve heard of God’s grace in their life (Proverbs 31:8).

• Invite Them In: Offer a seat beside you, an invitation to your small group, or a shared meal (Romans 12:13).

• Mentor and Disciple: Walk with them through Scripture, model prayer, and encourage their gifts (2 Timothy 2:2).

• Celebrate Growth: Point out evidences of grace you see and rejoice publicly (Philippians 1:6).

Scriptural Encouragement

Romans 15:7 — “Therefore welcome one another, just as Christ also welcomed you, to the glory of God.”

Acts 11:23 — “When he arrived and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with steadfast purpose.”

Hebrews 13:1 — “Let brotherly love continue.”

1 Thessalonians 5:11 — “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Following Barnabas, we become living invitations to belong, believe, and grow in Christ.

What role does community play in validating new believers, as seen in Acts 9:27?
