Identify & support today's Ebed-melechs?
How can we identify and support modern-day "Ebed-melechs" in our community?

Opening Scripture – Jeremiah 38:12

“Ebed-melech the Cushite said to Jeremiah, ‘Put these old rags and worn-out clothes under your arms to pad the ropes.’ So Jeremiah did so.”

Ebed-melech in Scripture

• A foreigner in Judah, yet fully devoted to the LORD’s justice (Jeremiah 38:7–13).

• Risked his position and safety to rescue Jeremiah from certain death.

• Received God’s personal promise of protection and deliverance (Jeremiah 39:15-18). Scripture presents this account as literal history, grounding our confidence that God still honors such faith today.

Why His Example Still Counts

• Demonstrates that compassion and courage are inseparable in biblical faith (Proverbs 31:8-9).

• Shows God values obedience over pedigree or status (Acts 10:34-35).

• Affirms that one person can reverse a culture of fear (2 Timothy 1:7).

Spotting Modern-Day Ebed-melechs

Look for believers who…

• Speak up when truth is suppressed or biblical voices are silenced.

• Defend the vulnerable—preborn children, persecuted Christians, trafficked victims, the elderly—despite social or professional cost.

• Use their influence, however small, to open doors for gospel proclamation.

• Exhibit a track record of quiet, practical mercy rather than public self-promotion (Matthew 6:3-4).

• Welcome biblical correction in their own lives, proving they fear God more than men (Proverbs 27:6).

Practical Ways to Support Them

• Encourage verbally and in writing; specific affirmation fuels perseverance (Hebrews 3:13).

• Stand beside them publicly; collective witness diffuses individual risk (Philippians 1:27-28).

• Share resources—legal aid, finances, contacts, platforms—so their advocacy isn’t hindered (Galatians 6:10).

• Cover them consistently in prayer, naming their spiritual, emotional, and material needs (Ephesians 6:18-20).

• Protect their reputation; correct rumors and misrepresentations promptly (Proverbs 18:17).

• Learn from their example, then duplicate the model in your own sphere (1 Corinthians 11:1).

A Promised Reward for Courage

God declared to Ebed-melech, “I will surely deliver you because you have trusted in Me” (Jeremiah 39:18). The same Lord assures every courageous servant: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me” (Matthew 25:40). Trusting that Scripture is accurate and literal, we can identify, stand with, and become today’s Ebed-melechs, knowing God still sees, records, and rewards such faith.
