Isaiah 36:5: Evaluating confidence sources?
How can Isaiah 36:5 guide us in evaluating our sources of confidence?

The Setting: Jerusalem Under Siege

Assyria’s field commander taunts King Hezekiah’s officials outside Jerusalem’s walls. Judah has recently sought help from Egypt and fortified itself, but the enemy sees through the ploys and calls them “empty words.”

The Verse Itself

Isaiah 36:5

“ You claim to have a strategy and strength for war, but these are only empty words. On whom are you relying, that you rebel against me? ”

Key Observation: A God-Given Question

• The commander’s words, though hostile, expose a spiritual reality: any confidence not rooted in the LORD is hollow.

• God allows this accusation to force Judah—and us—to ask, “Where is my trust anchored?”

Principle 1: Scrutinize the Source of Your Confidence

• Does it come from human alliances (Egypt), personal skill, or wealth?

• Or does it rest in the covenant-keeping God who cannot fail (Deuteronomy 7:9)?

Principle 2: Empty Boasting vs. True Strength

• “Strategy and strength” apart from God are mere talk (James 4:13-16).

• Genuine power flows from reliance on the LORD (Ephesians 6:10).

Principle 3: Beware of Second-Hand Alliances

• Egypt symbolized worldly backup that looked impressive but proved unreliable (Isaiah 30:1-3).

• Modern parallels: political clout, savings accounts, social media influence—helpful tools, but fragile saviors.

Principle 4: Align Confidence with God’s Word

• Test every source of assurance by Scripture’s promises (Psalm 119:105).

• If the Word condemns or sidelines it, discard it; if the Word commends it, embrace it.

Practical Self-Checks Drawn from Isaiah 36:5

• When threatened, do I first calculate resources or first seek the LORD?

• Do my words about “having a plan” echo worldly bravado or humble faith?

• Would an observer say my decisions display dependence on God or on human leverage?

• If my chosen support crumbles, does my peace vanish?

Supporting Scriptures Echoing the Same Warning

Psalm 20:7: “Some trust in chariots and others in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.”

Jeremiah 17:5,7: “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind... Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD.”

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart...”

2 Chronicles 32:7-8: “With him is only an arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles.”

Encouragement: Confidence Anchored in Christ

Because Jesus has conquered sin, death, and every hostile power (Colossians 2:15), believers possess an unshakable refuge. Evaluate each confidence-source by asking: “Does this stand in Christ’s victory, or does it stand alone?” Everything built on any other foundation will prove to be “only empty words.”

Connect Isaiah 36:5 with Proverbs 3:5-6 on trusting God over human wisdom.
