Israelites' journey: reliance on God?
What does the Israelites' journey teach about reliance on God in difficult times?

A Fresh Start in a Harsh Place

• “On the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left the land of Egypt, the whole congregation of Israel set out from Elim and came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai.” (Exodus 16:1)

• Barely six weeks out of Egypt, the people go from palm-shaded Elim (Exodus 15:27) straight into a barren stretch of sand and rock.

• God allows the setting to shift so His people will shift their trust from what they can see to the One they cannot see.

Pressure Reveals the Heart

Exodus 16:2-3: complaints rise as provisions run out.

• Their words expose fear: “You have brought us into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger!”

• Difficult seasons still surface the same questions for us: Will God come through? Can He handle my lack?

Provision Tailor-Made for the Trial

Exodus 16:4: “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you…’ ”

• Quail at night (v. 12), manna each morning (vv. 13-15).

Deuteronomy 8:3 (recalling this event) underscores the lesson: we live “by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”

• God meets needs in ways that highlight His sufficiency, not our resourcefulness.

Daily Dependence, Not Stockpiling

Exodus 16:16-18: gather only what each person needs for the day. Attempted hoarding (v. 20) breeds worms.

Matthew 6:11 echoes the principle: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

• Trust looks like taking just today’s portion and believing tomorrow’s will be there when tomorrow comes.

The Sabbath Test: Resting While Needs Remain

Exodus 16:22-30: double manna on day six, none on day seven.

• Rest required faith: refuse to work and rely on yesterday’s provision.

• By resting, Israel declared, “God sustains us even when we stop striving.”

Lessons for Every Wilderness Season

• God sometimes leads into difficulty to teach dependence (Deuteronomy 8:2).

• Complaints reveal opportunities to confess fear and choose trust (Philippians 4:6-7).

• His supply arrives on time, in the right amount, and in unexpected forms (Lamentations 3:22-23).

• We honor Him by:

– Expecting fresh provision each morning.

– Receiving what He gives without grasping for more.

– Resting when He says rest, affirming He is enough.

Living the Lesson Today

• Identify where resources feel scarce—money, strength, wisdom.

• Ask for and look for “manna moments” God sends to sustain you.

• Refuse to hoard; share freely, confident God will refill the jar.

• Celebrate weekly rest as an act of faith, declaring, “The LORD is my shepherd; I lack nothing.” (Psalm 23:1).

How can we trust God for provision in our own 'wilderness' experiences?
