Job 15:28: Seek refuge in God's truth?
How does Job 15:28 encourage us to seek refuge in God's truth?

Context of Job 15

- Job’s friend Eliphaz is warning that those who reject God end up empty-handed.

- His description of the wicked culminates in Job 15:28:

“He will dwell in ruined cities, in abandoned houses destined to become piles of rubble.”

- Though Eliphaz misapplies this to Job, the spiritual insight still stands: rebellion against God leaves us homeless at heart.

The Picture in Verse 28

- “Ruined cities” – once solid walls now crumbling; images of strength reduced to dust.

- “Abandoned houses” – places meant for shelter now echo with loneliness.

- “Piles of rubble” – complete collapse, nothing stable left.

Together the line portrays life built on anything other than God’s truth: impressive for a moment, but destined to fall apart.

Why False Refuges Fail

- Human wisdom alone: “The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Corinthians 3:19).

- Riches: “We have no enduring city here” (Hebrews 13:14).

- Reputation or power: “All flesh is grass… the grass withers” (Isaiah 40:6-7).

- Religion without relationship: “They will say, ‘Lord, Lord,’ … and I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you’” (Matthew 7:22-23).

Finding Safety in God’s Truth

- God Himself is our secure dwelling:

• “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1)

• “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)

- His Word supplies unshakable foundations:

• “The grass withers, the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

• Jesus: “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24)

- Truth shields us from ruin:

• “The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10)

• “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

Living It Out Today

- Build every decision on Scripture, not shifting opinion.

- Run to God first when anxieties rise—His promises never crack.

- Invest in eternal things: worship, discipleship, generosity, gospel witness.

- Guard the heart against compromise; little cracks become piles of rubble if left unchecked.

- Encourage others toward the same refuge; point them to the rock that will outlast every storm.

Job 15:28 warns that any shelter apart from the Lord ends in abandonment, but it also nudges us toward the enduring safety found in God’s unchanging truth.

In what ways can we avoid the pitfalls described in Job 15:28?
