Joseph's request: Trust God's timing?
What does Joseph's request in Genesis 40:14 teach about trusting God's timing?

Introducing Joseph’s Moment in Prison

Joseph has faithfully served in Potiphar’s house, been falsely accused, and now sits in Pharaoh’s prison. God grants him favor even there, and he interprets the dreams of two royal officials. Right after revealing the cupbearer’s favorable outcome he says:

“But when it goes well for you, remember me and show me kindness. Mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison.” (Genesis 40:14)

What Joseph’s Request Shows about Trust and Timing

• He takes action while still relying on God.

 – Joseph does not resign himself to injustice; he responsibly asks for help.

 – Active faith is not passive fatalism.

• He believes God can use ordinary channels.

 – A simple human request could be the means God employs.

• He does not manipulate or compromise.

 – No deceit, no self-promotion—just an honest appeal.

• The delay that follows proves God’s sovereignty.

 – “Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.” (Genesis 40:23)

 – Two more years pass (Genesis 41:1). God’s timetable, not Joseph’s, positions him for Pharaoh’s court at exactly the right moment.

How the Two-Year Wait Prepared God’s Greater Plan

1. Character formation—continued humility and dependence.

2. Perfect alignment—Pharaoh’s perplexing dreams come precisely when Joseph is available.

3. National deliverance—Egypt and Jacob’s family are saved (Genesis 50:20).

4. Divine glory—only God, not human networking, receives credit.

Living the Lesson Today

• Ask and act, but surrender results to God’s calendar.

• Delay is not denial; it may be preparation.

• When forgotten by people, remember you are held firmly in God’s memory.

• Look beyond immediate relief to God’s larger redemptive story.

• Refuse shortcuts that would compromise integrity; God’s route is always best.

Scriptures That Reinforce Waiting on God

Psalm 27:14 — “Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the LORD.”

Isaiah 40:31 — “But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength…”

Habakkuk 2:3 — “Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay.”

Romans 8:28 — God works all things for good.

Galatians 6:9 — “In due time we will reap … if we do not give up.”

Proverbs 3:5-6 — Trust, lean not on your own understanding.

Genesis 50:20 — God turns evil intentions to good.

Applying Genesis 40:14

• Pray and plan, but entrust the outcome to the Lord.

• Keep serving faithfully in the “prison seasons.”

• Believe that God’s “remembering” overrides human forgetfulness.

• Expect His timing to be later than yours—and far better.

How can we remember others in need, as Joseph asked in Genesis 40:14?
