Joshua 20:6: Seek God's protection?
How does Joshua 20:6 encourage us to seek God's protection and guidance?

The Setting: Cities of Refuge

• God instructed Israel to establish six designated towns where someone who caused accidental death could flee (Joshua 20:1-5).

• These cities illustrated the Lord’s compassionate provision for sinners who needed immediate shelter and a fair hearing.

Key Verse: Joshua 20:6

“He is to stay in that city until he has stood trial before the congregation and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then he may return to his own home in the city from which he fled.”

What This Reveals About God’s Protection

• Immediate refuge – The moment the fugitive crossed the city gate, he came under divine protection. God invites us to “run” to Him in danger just as quickly (Psalm 46:1).

• Fair judgment – The manslayer was kept safe “until he has stood trial before the congregation.” God’s protection never ignores truth; He guards us while also addressing sin with justice (Deuteronomy 32:4).

• Ongoing covering – Safety lasted “until the death of the high priest.” In other words, the refuge remained secure for as long as the ordained mediator lived. Our eternal High Priest, Jesus, never dies, ensuring everlasting protection (Hebrews 7:24-25).

Practical Encouragement to Seek His Guidance

• Don’t hesitate—flee to Him. Just as the manslayer had to move quickly, we act wisely when we bring every crisis to the Lord first (Psalm 91:1-2).

• Submit to God’s process. The fugitive accepted the city’s jurisdiction and awaited the congregation’s decision. Submitting to God’s Word and Spirit guards our steps (Proverbs 3:5-6).

• Stay under spiritual covering. Remaining in the city symbolized staying within God-appointed boundaries. Regular fellowship, Scripture intake, and obedience keep us inside His protective walls (John 15:9-10).

New Testament Echoes

Hebrews 6:18 calls believers to “flee for refuge to take hold of the hope set before us.” The cities prefigure Christ Himself as our safest place.

Hebrews 4:14-16 encourages us to “approach the throne of grace with confidence” because our great High Priest sympathizes and intercedes. The death of Israel’s high priest released the fugitive; the death and resurrection of Jesus free us forever.

Take-Home Points

1. God has already provided a refuge—run to Him immediately.

2. His protection works hand-in-hand with His righteous guidance.

3. Staying under His covering requires ongoing trust and obedience.

4. Our eternal High Priest guarantees safety that no earthly danger can overturn.
