What can we learn from Achsah's approach to her father in Joshua 15:18? The Setting in Joshua 15:18–19 “Now it came about, when she came to him, that she persuaded Othniel to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, ‘What do you desire?’ ” Caleb had just given his daughter Achsah to Othniel after the conquest of Debir. Though newly married, Achsah immediately turned her thoughts toward securing a future blessing for her household: land with water. Achsah’s Approach: What We Observe • Initiative—She “persuaded” Othniel, then personally approached Caleb. • Respect—She dismounted before speaking (a cultural sign of honor, cf. 1 Samuel 25:23). • Clarity—She stated exactly what she needed: “Give me springs of water” (v. 19). • Faith—She believed her father would grant a good gift (cf. Matthew 7:11). • Persistence—She did not settle for the dry land already allotted but sought the resources to make it fruitful. Lessons for Today 1. Ask with confidence rooted in relationship. – Caleb gladly listened; we approach our Father “with confidence” (Hebrews 4:16). 2. Honor authority while expressing need. – Respectful demeanor does not stifle bold requests (Ephesians 6:2). 3. Be specific in prayer. – Achsah named the blessing she sought; Jesus encouraged precise petitions (Mark 10:51). 4. Look beyond immediate provision to long-term fruitfulness. – Springs would sustain generations; wise believers seek enduring spiritual resources (Colossians 1:9-10). 5. Combine faith with action. – She planned, spoke, and received. Faith acts (James 2:17). Putting It into Practice • Identify an area of “dry ground” in life or ministry. • Approach the Father with reverent boldness, naming the “springs” required. • Trust His generosity while submitting to His timing. • Step out as though the request is already heard, preparing to steward the blessing. |
