What can we learn from Jesus' approach in John 21:4 for our ministry? The Moment on the Shore “Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus.” (John 21:4) Key Observations From Jesus’ Approach • Jesus is present before the disciples ever notice Him. • He positions Himself where they can see and hear Him once their eyes are opened. • The timing—“early in the morning”—shows initiative; He seeks them at the start of a new day. • He stands; He is neither hurried nor hidden, but calm and ready. • The disciples’ lack of recognition does not deter His purpose or love. Lessons for Our Ministry Today • God often arrives ahead of us in any situation, preparing hearts before we minister (cf. Deuteronomy 31:8). • We serve best when we deliberately place ourselves within sight and earshot of those we’re called to reach—visible, approachable, patient. • Begin ministry “early”—taking initiative rather than waiting for people to come to us (2 Timothy 4:2). • Stand firm and calm. A settled presence communicates confidence in God’s plan (Psalm 46:10). • People may not recognize Jesus at first; our consistency makes it easier for them to see Him through us over time (Matthew 5:16). Practical Steps to Imitate Jesus’ Approach 1. Arrive early—physically and spiritually. Pray before gatherings, show up before others, prepare the environment. 2. Be visible. Choose ministry spaces where those you serve naturally pass by; don’t hide in offices or behind programs. 3. Maintain a posture of readiness. Stand—or sit—in a way that signals availability, not distraction. 4. Speak only when led. Jesus first stood silent; words came after presence was established (John 21:5–6). 5. Anticipate slow recognition. Like the Emmaus travelers who “were kept from recognizing Him” (Luke 24:15–16), some will take time to see Christ at work. Stay patient. 6. Trust His prior work. Remember He is already on the “shore” of every heart you approach (Revelation 3:20). 7. Lead by serving needs. Moments later Jesus provides a catch of fish and breakfast (John 21:6, 9). Meet practical needs to reveal spiritual truth. Encouragement for Ongoing Ministry When we start each day believing Jesus is already standing on the shore, our role shifts from striving to joining. We simply step into His prepared scene, make ourselves available, speak when prompted, and watch recognition dawn in the hearts of those we serve. |
