Lessons from Solomon: Earthly vs. Spiritual?
What lessons can we learn from Solomon's reign about earthly vs. spiritual riches?

Solomon’s unmatched splendor—1 Kings 10:23

“So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.”

Gifts from God, yet tests for the heart

• Wealth and wisdom came directly from God’s favor (1 Kings 3:12–13).

• Even good gifts expose where our security lies (Deuteronomy 8:17–18).

• Jesus reminds us to view treasure through an eternal lens: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21)

Warning signs in the king’s lifestyle

• Horses and chariots multiplied (1 Kings 10:26–29) despite God’s warning, “He must not acquire many horses” (Deuteronomy 17:16).

• Extravagant gold (1 Kings 10:14–22) dazzled the nation, yet Ecclesiastes 5:10 notes, “Whoever loves money never has enough.”

• Foreign wives turned his heart (1 Kings 11:1–4), fulfilling Deuteronomy 17:17’s caution that great wealth and many wives would divert devotion.

Spiritual riches Solomon prized—then neglected

• He originally asked, “Give Your servant an understanding heart” (1 Kings 3:9).

Proverbs 3:13–15 (authored by Solomon) exalts wisdom above gold.

James 1:5 promises the same generous wisdom to all who ask.

The tragedy of divided allegiance

• “Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD” (1 Kings 11:6).

• Earthly success could not shield him from spiritual decline; the kingdom was torn after his death (1 Kings 11:11–13).

Ecclesiastes 2:11 records his sobering verdict on material splendor: “Behold, all was vanity and a chasing after the wind.”

Lessons for us today

• Earthly riches are temporary trusts, not ultimate goals (Matthew 6:19–20).

• Spiritual riches—wisdom, obedience, fellowship with God—endure forever (1 Timothy 6:17–19).

• Prosperity tests faithfulness as surely as adversity; guard the heart diligently (Proverbs 4:23).

• Finish well: “Fear God and keep His commandments” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

Christ: the greater Solomon and our true treasure

• “Now something greater than Solomon is here” (Matthew 12:42).

• In Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3).

• Lasting wealth is found in Him, not in the gold of any kingdom.
