Lessons from dismissed troops' actions?
What lessons can we learn from the actions of the dismissed troops?

Setting the Scene

“Meanwhile, the troops that Amaziah had sent back and not allowed to fight with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon, killed three thousand people, and carried off much plunder.” (2 Chronicles 25:13)

What We Notice About the Dismissed Troops

• They were mercenaries—hired for pay, not covenant loyalty.

• Their pride was wounded when King Amaziah sent them home.

• Offended, they lashed out at Judah’s undefended towns.

• Their retaliation cost 3,000 innocent lives and much treasure.

Lesson 1: Offense Unchecked Turns Destructive

Proverbs 14:29—“Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is quick-tempered exalts folly.”

James 1:20—“For man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness of God.”

The troops nursed grievance rather than submitting to God’s overruling. Offense, when indulged, quickly metastasizes into violence and sin.

Lesson 2: Motives Matter More Than Numbers

1 Samuel 16:7—God “looks at the heart.”

Matthew 6:21—“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Their service was transactional. Money withheld, they revealed true motives. God seeks soldiers whose allegiance is to Him, not the paycheck.

Lesson 3: Ungodly Alliances Invite Collateral Damage

2 Chronicles 25:7—The prophet warned Amaziah, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the Lord is not with Israel.”

2 Corinthians 6:14—“Do not be unequally yoked.”

Even after Amaziah obeyed and dismissed them, the very link he forged brought ruin to his people. Aligning with those who do not honor God never ends harmlessly.

Lesson 4: Partial Obedience Still Bears a Cost

Amaziah obeyed the prophet but had first hired the troops. The ripple effects of earlier compromise still landed on Judah. Galatians 6:7—“Whatever a man sows, he will reap.” Full obedience at the outset spares later grief.

Lesson 5: Pride Makes Brothers Into Enemies

The raiders and their victims were both descendants of Jacob. Pride fractured family ties. Proverbs 13:10—“Where there is strife, there is pride.” Humility preserves unity; pride weaponizes kinship.

Lesson 6: Guard the Heart, Not Just the Hands

The troops never raised a sword in the sanctioned battle, yet their hearts were already at war. Mark 7:21-22 lists “evil thoughts…murder” as proceeding from within. Victory over sin begins by surrendering the inner life to God.

Living It Out Today

• Refuse to nurse offenses; choose forgiveness before anger gains momentum.

• Examine motives for service—do we labor for reward or for the Lord? (Colossians 3:23-24)

• Weigh every partnership by Scripture, not convenience.

• Pursue whole-hearted obedience; delayed or half measures still devastate.

• Cultivate humility that binds believers together in peace (Ephesians 4:2-3).
