What can we learn about desperation and faith from Jairus in Mark 5:23? The Scene in Mark 5:23 “and pleaded with Him earnestly, ‘My little daughter is near death. Please come and place Your hands on her, so that she will be healed and live.’” A Father’s Desperation • Jairus is a synagogue ruler—respected, educated, accustomed to order. Yet he falls at Jesus’ feet (v. 22) because no earthly resource can help his dying child. • Desperation strips away pride. In that raw moment Jairus’ position, reputation, and dignity mean nothing compared to his need. • Psalm 34:18 echoes this scene: “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Jairus experiences that nearness in person. Faith That Acts, Not Merely Feels • He “pleaded … earnestly.” Faith moves the feet as well as stirs the heart (James 2:17). • Jairus believes Jesus can heal with a touch—simple, direct, personal. Such confidence reflects Hebrews 11:6: “without faith it is impossible to please God.” • He voices his request before the miracle occurs. Biblical faith speaks expectation before sight (Romans 4:17–21). Faith Persists Through Delays and Distractions • While Jesus is on the way, the woman with the hemorrhage interrupts (vv. 25–34). Delay could have shattered Jairus’ hope, yet he remains. • When the report arrives—“Your daughter is dead” (v. 35)—Jesus says, “Do not be afraid; only believe.” Faith must survive the worst news. • 2 Corinthians 5:7 underlines the lesson: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Humble Petition, Not Presumption • Jairus asks, “Please come…” He doesn’t dictate methods or timing; he simply trusts the Lord’s presence and power. • True faith approaches God with boldness (Hebrews 4:16) yet recognizes His sovereignty (Matthew 6:10). Lessons for Our Daily Walk • Desperation can be a doorway to deeper dependence on Christ. • Faith is expressed in concrete steps—seeking, pleading, waiting. • The Lord welcomes the broken who acknowledge their need. • Delays and dark reports test faith but also refine it, proving that hope rests in Jesus, not circumstances. • Jesus honors faith that clings to Him, even when all visible hope is gone.
