Link Jer 51:20 & Eph 6:10-18: Warfare.
Connect Jeremiah 51:20 with Ephesians 6:10-18 on spiritual warfare.

Setting the Scene

Jeremiah is proclaiming judgment on Babylon. In the middle of that prophecy, God speaks to His people and says, “You are My war club, My weapons for battle; with you I shatter nations; with you I destroy kingdoms” (Jeremiah 51:20). Paul later addresses the church in Ephesians 6:10-18 and describes the armor of God for every believer. One passage shows us as God’s offensive instrument, the other outfits us defensively and offensively for continual spiritual warfare.

Jeremiah 51:20 – God’s War Club

• “War club” (or “battle-axe”) is a literal tool of combat.

• The verse emphasizes:

– God Himself chooses and wields the instrument.

– Real nations and kingdoms are shattered—literal consequences.

• Application: the believer, surrendered to the Lord, becomes His chosen implement to confront evil in every sphere (personal, cultural, global).

Ephesians 6:10-18 – The Full Armor

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil…” (vv. 10-11). Paul names six pieces:

1. Belt of truth (v. 14)

2. Breastplate of righteousness (v. 14)

3. Feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace (v. 15)

4. Shield of faith (v. 16)

5. Helmet of salvation (v. 17)

6. Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (v. 17)

7. Continual prayer (v. 18) undergirds them all.

Connecting the War Club and the Armor

• Ownership

– Jeremiah: God says, “You are My war club.”

– Ephesians: “Put on the armor of God.” Everything is supplied and directed by Him.

• Offensive Purpose

– War club: shatters, destroys.

– Armor: the sword of the Spirit (Word) is explicitly offensive; faith extinguishes fiery darts so we can advance.

• Divine Strength

– Jeremiah’s club has no power apart from the One who swings it.

– Ephesians begins, “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.”

• Target

– Jeremiah: physical kingdoms under demonic influence.

– Ephesians: “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but… against the spiritual forces of evil” (v. 12). The battleground shifts from geopolitical to spiritual yet remains literal.

• Result

– Jeremiah: nations shattered.

– Ephesians: believers “stand” (vv. 11,13) and advance the gospel (v. 15), toppling strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4).

Piece-by-Piece Alignment

• Belt of Truth – aligns us with God’s reality; the war club must be straight to strike true.

• Breastplate of Righteousness – keeps the instrument clean; unrighteousness dulls the edge.

• Gospel Footwear – mobilizes the war club; without movement, no impact.

• Shield of Faith – protects while repositioning for another swing; Jeremiah’s club is effective because faith trusts the wielder.

• Helmet of Salvation – guards the mind from enemy lies that would cause us to drop the club.

• Sword of the Spirit – couples with the club: Word spoken (sword) and life yielded (club) produce decisive blows.

• Prayer – the communication line ensuring the club never acts independently but always in the Master’s hand.

Practical Takeaways for the Battle

• Daily surrender: offer yourself to be God’s instrument (Romans 12:1).

• Suit up deliberately: verbalize each piece of armor in morning prayer.

• Stay sharp in Scripture: the war club is most effective when the sword (Word) is active (Hebrews 4:12).

• Expect real resistance and real victory: “Resist him, standing firm in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).

• Operate in community: Jeremiah’s prophecy was to a people; Paul’s letter addresses the church. Isolation dulls effectiveness.

• Keep the long view: Babylon fell, and so will every stronghold opposing Christ. The same Lord still swings His war club through armored believers today.

How can believers today be instruments of God's will like in Jeremiah 51:20?
