Connect Matthew 14:27 with Psalm 23:4 on overcoming fear with faith.

Courage in the Storm: Matthew 14:27

“But Jesus spoke up at once: ‘Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.’”

• Night, wind, and waves had the disciples fighting panic.

• Jesus literally walks on the water—proving He rules what terrifies them.

• His three-part command:

– “Take courage!”—choose boldness because He authoritatively grants it.

– “It is I”—more than self-identification; the Greek echoes “I AM,” linking Him to Yahweh (Exodus 3:14).

– “Do not be afraid.”—fear is dismissed as illegitimate in His presence.

Confidence in the Valley: Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

• David describes a path so dark it resembles death itself.

• The resolve: “I will fear no evil.” Why? “You are with me.”

• Rod (defense) and staff (guidance) guarantee both protection and direction.

Same Voice, Same Presence

• Jesus’ “It is I” mirrors the Shepherd’s nearness in Psalm 23.

• Both passages anchor fearlessness in a Person, not in circumstances:

– Storm or valley, the Lord stands in literal, tangible authority.

– His presence is the decisive factor that neutralizes fear.

Overcoming Fear with Faith

• Recognize His Presence

– He is not distant; He steps onto the waves and into valleys.

Hebrews 13:5: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

• Receive His Word as Fact

– Scripture is God-breathed truth, not suggestion (2 Timothy 3:16).

– What He declares—“Do not be afraid”—is both command and empowerment.

• Redirect Focus

– Peter stayed afloat while looking at Jesus (Matthew 14:29-30).

Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast mind, because he trusts in You.”

• Rest in His Authority

– Storm, evil, death—each submits to the One who conquered the grave (Revelation 1:17-18).

Additional Anchors for Faith

Joshua 1:9—“Do not be terrified or discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

Psalm 27:1—“The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?”

John 16:33—“In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Living the Connection Today

• Speak His promises aloud in moments of anxiety—truth drives out dread.

• Picture the Shepherd’s rod and staff, or Jesus’ sandaled feet on the waves, whenever fear rises.

• Step forward in obedience even while circumstances remain unsettled; faith trusts the Person more than the path.
