Connect Psalm 49:18 with Matthew 6:19-21 on storing treasures in heaven.

Earthly applause and its short horizon

Psalm 49:18: “Though in his lifetime he blesses himself—and men praise you when you prosper—”

• The psalmist pictures a person who congratulates himself for his prosperity.

• Surrounding verses (vv. 16-17) underline that wealth cannot follow him beyond the grave.

• Earth’s applause is loud but brief; it ends the moment life ends (v. 19).

Jesus redirects the investment strategy

Matthew 6:19-21:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

• “Moth…rust…thieves”: three unavoidable forces that erode earthly assets.

• “Heaven”: a secure realm where nothing decays and no thief can enter.

• Heart follows treasure; investment reveals affection.

How Psalm 49 and Matthew 6 intertwine

• Both passages expose the same illusion: wealth offers lasting security.

Psalm 49 shows the illusion at death’s door; Matthew 6 shows it in daily choices.

• The psalm warns, “You cannot keep it.”

• Jesus commands, “Move it to heaven while you can.”

Supporting voices in Scripture

Proverbs 11:4—“Riches are worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”

1 Timothy 6:17-19—Paul echoes Jesus: tell the rich to be “rich in good works…storing up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the future.”

Luke 12:15-21—The rich fool’s barns burst, yet his soul is required that night.

James 5:1-3—Wealth hoarded “has rotted…their corrosion will testify against you.”

Practicing heavenly deposits today

• Give generously and quietly (Matthew 6:3-4).

• Serve others with joy (Hebrews 6:10).

• Invest time in discipling and evangelizing souls that will live forever (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20).

• Embrace contentment over accumulation (Hebrews 13:5).

• Live each day aware that “we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:10).

A closing reminder

Earth’s applause fades; heaven’s reward endures. Transfer possessions, time, and affection from temporary vaults to eternal accounts while opportunity remains.

How can we ensure our praise is directed towards God, not wealth?
