Living truthfully: new identity in Christ?
How does living truthfully reflect our new identity in Christ from Ephesians 4?

Setting the Scene: Our New Life in Christ

“Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are members of one another.” (Ephesians 4:25)

Paul has just reminded believers that they have “put on the new self” (v. 24). Truthfulness is one of the first evidences that the old self really has been discarded and the new self is alive.

Why Truthfulness Matters to the New Self

• Truth matches the character of our Savior.

John 14:6 — “I am the way and the truth and the life.”

• Jesus purchased not only our forgiveness but our transformation.

• A lie drags us back toward the darkness Christ pulled us from (Ephesians 5:8).

• Truthfulness displays the family likeness of God, “with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17).

Members of One Another: The Body Connection

• Paul’s reason for truthful speech is relational: “for we are members of one another.”

• In the human body, nerves must send accurate signals; false signals cripple movement.

• Lies fracture fellowship, erode trust, and impair ministry.

• Speaking truth strengthens the ligaments of love that bind believers together (Ephesians 4:15-16).

Old Self vs. New Self: A Clear Break

Old Self

• Dresses itself in deception (Genesis 3:13).

• Protects self-image at any cost.

• Seeks quick relief from consequences.

New Self

• Has “been renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator” (Colossians 3:9-10).

• Finds security in Christ’s righteousness, not self-manufactured impressions.

• Prefers temporary discomfort to dishonesty, trusting God with outcomes.

Truthfulness Imitates God’s Holy Standards

Proverbs 12:22 — “Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight.”

Psalm 51:6 — “Surely You desire truth in the inmost being.”

• God’s delight becomes the believer’s aim; living truthfully is worship in everyday conversation.

Practical Ways to Live Truthfully

1. Pause before speaking. Ask, “Is this completely accurate?”

2. Reject half-truths and flattering exaggerations.

3. Keep promises, even small ones; integrity is indivisible.

4. Admit mistakes promptly. Confession restores credibility.

5. Let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no (Matthew 5:37).

6. Saturate your mind with Scripture; truth spoken in will produce truth spoken out.

Scripture Connections for Ongoing Study

Zechariah 8:16 — God’s people in every age are called to “speak truth to one another.”

Ephesians 4:15 — “Speaking the truth in love” is the path to maturity.

• 3 John 4 — “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”

Living Truthfully as a Witness

When believers speak truth consistently:

• The world sees a community that mirrors its truthful King.

• Our message about the gospel gains credibility.

• The darkness is exposed, and some who watch us are drawn into the light.

Truthfulness is not a mere moral tweak; it is the natural language of a heart made new in Christ.
