Psalm 31:6 Revisited

“I hate those who cling to worthless idols, but in the LORD I trust.”

Jesus — Inviting Us to Place All Confidence in God

John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in Me as well.”

Mark 11:22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus said to them.

Matthew 6:30 “If God so clothes the grass of the field… will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”

These words mirror David’s single-hearted trust by urging us to shift every anxiety, every future hope, onto the Father—and, now, onto the Son who shares His throne.

Jesus — Renouncing Competing Loyalties

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters… You cannot serve both God and money.”

Matthew 6:33 “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Psalm 31:6 denounces “worthless idols.” Jesus applies the same principle to anything—wealth, status, even daily needs—that tries to tug our trust away from God alone.

Paul — Trust that Overflows with Joy and Peace

Romans 15:13 “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Philippians 4:6-7 “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

1 Timothy 6:17 “Instruct those who are rich… not to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but in God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.”

Paul shows that trusting God is no mere feeling—it produces settled peace, active prayer, and freedom from materialistic idols.

Hebrews — Faith as the Non-Negotiable

Hebrews 11:6 “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.”

Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your lives free from the love of money… for He has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”

The writer echoes David: confidence in the unseen Lord trumps every earthly prop.

Peter and John — Casting Cares and Guarding Hearts

1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

1 John 5:21 “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”

Peter turns Psalm 31:6 into a practical invitation—throw every burden onto God. John echoes the psalm’s closing punch: idols still lurk; keep trusting the living Lord.

Living It Out Today

• Trade worry for prayer (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Expose and discard modern idols—anything you fear, love, or serve more than Christ (1 John 5:21).

• Rehearse God’s promises aloud; faith grows by hearing His word (Romans 10:17).

• Act on trust: obey promptly, give generously, rest securely—because “never will I forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
