Other texts on enduring suffering?
What other scriptures emphasize the importance of steadfastness in the face of suffering?

Job 2:4 and the Call to Steadfastness

“Skin for skin!” Satan replied. “A man will give up all he owns in exchange for his life.”

The adversary insists that suffering will make anyone abandon faith; Scripture repeatedly proves him wrong. The following passages echo and reinforce Job’s resolve.

New Testament Reminders to Hold Fast

James 1:2-4 – “Consider it pure joy… because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work…” Trials are not random; they mature us.

James 5:10-11 – “As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets… You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord.” James explicitly links Job’s story to our own need for endurance.

1 Peter 1:6-7 – We “suffer grief in various trials” so that faith may be “proved genuine.” The fiery furnace refines, never destroys.

1 Peter 4:12-13 – “Do not be surprised at the fiery trial… rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ.” Steadfastness is fellowship with Christ Himself.

Romans 5:3-5 – “We also rejoice in our sufferings, because suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” A chain reaction that ends in unshakable hope.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 – “Our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal glory… so we fix our eyes not on what is seen.” The unseen reward eclipses present pain.

Hebrews 10:32-36 – Recall former hardships, “you need perseverance so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.” Memory fuels endurance.

Hebrews 12:1-3 – Run the race “with perseverance,” looking to Jesus who “endured the cross… so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Christ’s steadfastness anchors ours.

Revelation 2:10 – “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” The ultimate incentive: eternal reward for temporal faithfulness.

Old Testament Echoes

Psalm 27:14 – “Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.” Waiting and courage walk together.

Isaiah 40:31 – “Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength… they will run and not grow weary.” God supplies the stamina He requires.

Habakkuk 3:17-19 – Though crops fail, “yet I will rejoice in the LORD… He makes my feet like the deer’s.” Joy can outclimb circumstances.

Daniel 3:17-18 – Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: “Even if He does not deliver us, we will not serve your gods.” Steadfast obedience over survival.

Living It Out

Job 2:4 showcases Satan’s wager that pain will pry us from God. Scripture counters with a parade of witnesses—prophets, apostles, and the Lord Himself—who stood firm and received the prize. Their stories invite us to answer every trial with the same settled resolve: hold fast, because the God who allows suffering also sustains, refines, and ultimately rewards those who remain steadfast.
