Other texts on purity and holiness?
What other scriptures emphasize the need for spiritual purification and holiness?

Nehemiah’s Example of Purity

Nehemiah 13:30 sets the tone: “So I purified them from everything foreign and assigned duties to the priests and Levites, each to his own task.” The returned exiles could not afford spiritual compromise; they belonged wholly to the Lord. Scripture repeats that same call from Genesis to Revelation.

Foundations in the Law

Exodus 19:10-11 — “Consecrate them today and tomorrow. … They must wash their clothes and be ready.”

Leviticus 11:44-45 — “Consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, because I am holy.”

Leviticus 20:7-8 — “Consecrate yourselves and be holy; for I am the LORD your God. … I am the LORD, who sanctifies you.”

Heart-Cries in the Psalms

Psalm 24:3-4 — “Who may ascend … ? He who has clean hands and a pure heart.”

Psalm 51:7, 10 — “Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean … Create in me a pure heart, O God.”

Refining Words from the Prophets

Isaiah 1:16-18 — “Wash and cleanse yourselves … Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”

Ezekiel 36:25-27 — “I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean.”

Malachi 3:2-3 — “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi.”

Purity Taught by Jesus

Matthew 5:8 — “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

John 15:3 — “You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.”

Apostolic Instructions for Holy Living

2 Corinthians 7:1 — “Let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

Ephesians 5:25-27 — Christ “gave Himself up for her to sanctify her, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word.”

Colossians 3:5-10 — “Put to death, therefore, the components of your earthly nature … and put on the new self.”

Titus 2:14 — He “gave Himself for us … to purify for Himself a people of His own.”

Hebrews 10:22 — “Let us draw near … having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us and our bodies washed with pure water.”

1 Peter 1:15-16 — “Be holy in all you do, for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

James 4:8 — “Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts.”

1 John 1:7-9 — “The blood of Jesus … cleanses us from all sin.”

1 John 3:3 — “Everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”

Living the Purified Life Today

• Guard inputs: choose media, friendships, and habits that keep heart and mind clean.

• Stay repentant: confess sin quickly; believe Christ’s blood still cleanses.

• Feed on the Word: the Spirit uses Scripture as living water for ongoing washing (John 17:17).

• Cultivate community: accountability with fellow believers helps keep compromise out—Nehemiah assigned every priest “to his own task.”

• Look ahead: the pursuit of holiness now anticipates the day we will “see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2).

The thread is unmistakable: God’s people are set apart. From Nehemiah’s reforms to the apostolic letters, Scripture insists on spiritual purification and holiness for all who belong to the Lord.

How can we apply Nehemiah's dedication to purity in our church today?
