Qualities for spiritual leaders?
What qualities in 1 Chronicles 11:42 should we seek in our spiritual leaders?

Zooming In on the Verse

“Adina son of Shiza the Reubenite, a leader of the Reubenites, and thirty with him.” (1 Chronicles 11:42)

Snapshots of God-Honoring Leadership

• Known by Name and Lineage

 – Scripture records Adina’s family and tribe. A leader lives transparently; his life and background withstand scrutiny (cf. 1 Timothy 3:2).

• Faithful Within His Tribe

 – Though the Reubenites dwelt east of the Jordan, Adina aligned with David. Spiritual leaders stay loyal to God’s anointed purposes even when geography or culture differs (Joshua 22:1-5).

• Recognized Authority

 – “A leader of the Reubenites” shows public acknowledgement of his gifting. True authority is confirmed by the community, not self-proclaimed (Acts 6:3).

• Courage Among the Mighty

 – Inclusion in David’s elite warriors signals proven valor (2 Samuel 23:8). Leaders must face spiritual battles with courage (Ephesians 6:10-13).

• Influence That Attracts Others

 – “And thirty with him” indicates followers who trusted his direction. Effective leaders don’t walk alone; they cultivate cooperation and unity (Philippians 2:1-4).

• Servant Under Greater Authority

 – Although he led thirty men, Adina served under David. Spiritual leaders model submission to Christ, the true King (1 Peter 5:2-4).

Reinforcing Passages

1 Timothy 3:1-7—character requirements for overseers.

Titus 1:7-9—holding firmly to the trustworthy word.

Proverbs 20:28—“Loving devotion and faithfulness guard a king.”

Putting It Into Practice

• Seek leaders whose lives are open books—nothing to hide.

• Look for men who stand firm on truth even when isolated.

• Value proven track records over flashy charisma.

• Follow those who gladly serve under Christ’s supreme rule while equipping others to stand with them.

How can we apply Adina's example of leadership in our daily lives?
