What qualities of children should we emulate to enter God's kingdom? Seeing the Verse in Context “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Luke 18:17) Why Children? Jesus points to children because they instinctively display traits that perfectly position a heart to receive grace. He is not praising immaturity; He is highlighting attitudes that adults often lose. Qualities to Emulate • Humble Dependence – Children know they cannot provide for themselves. – Matthew 18:4: “Whoever humbles himself like this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” – We approach God acknowledging our complete need of His mercy, not our merit (Ephesians 2:8-9). • Trusting Faith – Kids believe what loving parents say. – Mark 10:15 echoes Luke 18:17, stressing a “reception” marked by trust. – Proverbs 3:5 encourages the same: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” • Receptive Heart – A child eagerly receives gifts without suspicion. – John 1:12: “To all who did receive Him…He gave the right to become children of God.” – Salvation is received, not earned. • Simplicity and Purity – Children are free from cynical complexity. – 1 Peter 2:2: “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk…” – Psalm 24:3-4 links a pure heart with the ability to “stand in His holy place.” • Teachability – Kids are quick to learn and adjust. – Psalm 25:9: “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.” – A teachable spirit keeps believers growing and obedient. • Joyful Wonder – Children marvel at what adults overlook. – Psalm 131:2 captures David’s childlike calm and contentment in God. – Such wonder fuels worship and gratitude. Putting It into Practice • Confess self-reliance; ask God to renew humble dependence. • Choose daily to trust His Word above feelings or cultural voices. • Receive grace freshly—stop striving to earn what He freely gives. • Guard purity of thought; simplify life where clutter dulls spiritual sensitivity. • Stay teachable: keep reading Scripture, welcoming correction. • Cultivate wonder—notice and praise God for the ordinary miracles around you. When these childlike qualities shape our hearts, we experience the very life of the kingdom Jesus offers. |
