How can we identify and remove modern "sorcery" from our lives today? Setting the Stage: The Biblical Warning Against Sorcery “Idolatry, sorcery, hatred, discord, jealousy, rage, rivalries, divisions, factions…” (Galatians 5:20). God places sorcery alongside other works of the flesh—clear evidence it has no place in the life of a believer. Understanding Sorcery in Biblical Terms • Greek word “pharmakeia” – literally “use of drugs, potions, spells”; broadly, any attempt to manipulate spiritual realities apart from God. • Old Testament clarity: “Let no one be found among you… who practices divination or sorcery” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). • New Testament consistency: those who cling to sorcery face judgment (Revelation 21:8). Tracing Sorcery’s Modern Forms What once appeared as ancient incantations now surfaces in subtler packages: • Horoscopes, astrology apps, zodiac-centered social media memes. • Tarot cards, palm reading, crystal energy practices. • Spirit guides, channeling, séances, ouija boards. • Magic-based role-play or entertainment that invites real occult rituals. • New Age “manifestation” techniques that claim to bend reality by secret words or visualization. • Illicit drug use pursued for mind-altering spiritual experiences. • “White magic,” Wicca, or spells marketed as harmless self-help. • Any merchandise, music, or media that glorifies demonic power, curses, or witchcraft. Identifying Sorcery in Our Personal Lives • Inventory entertainment: books, movies, games, playlists—do they celebrate occult power? • Examine daily habits: do I check a horoscope before prayer or Scripture? • Monitor speech: do I joke about casting spells, “manifesting,” or “the universe” granting favors? • Assess décor and jewelry: are symbols of the occult worn or displayed? • Evaluate coping methods: do I reach for crystals, charms, or hallucinogens instead of God’s presence? • Observe friendships: am I pressured to attend “harmless” readings, rituals, or festivals? Removing Sorcery: Practical Steps Toward Purity • Confession and repentance (1 John 1:9). Name the practice, agree with God that it is sin, receive forgiveness. • Renunciation. Verbally cancel allegiance to any occult object or practice (Acts 19:18–19). • Destruction of objects. Burn, break, or trash books, cards, charms, crystals, or digital files linked to sorcery—no resale or donation. • Replace with truth. Increase daily Bible reading; memorize verses on God’s sovereignty (Psalm 115:3; Colossians 1:16–17). • Prayerful covering. Ask mature believers to stand with you, anoint your home, and dedicate spaces to Christ (James 5:16). • Fill with the Spirit. Cultivate worship, fellowship, and service so no spiritual “vacancy” remains (Ephesians 5:18–20). • Ongoing vigilance. Stay alert; refuse curiosity’s pull toward new occult trends (1 Peter 5:8–9). Living in the Freedom of the Spirit When sorcery is cast off, the Spirit’s fruit flourishes: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23). Trade counterfeit power for the genuine presence of Christ, and enjoy the liberty He secured. |
