Samuel's example: prioritize God's presence?
How does Samuel's example encourage us to prioritize God's presence in our lives?

Setting the Scene: Samuel Beside the Ark

“ …Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was located.” (1 Samuel 3:3)

• The ark represented God’s earthly throne (Exodus 25:22).

• By choosing to rest there, young Samuel literally arranged his life around God’s presence.

Choose Proximity Over Convenience

• Samuel’s bed wasn’t in the comfort of his own quarters but beside the ark.

James 4:8 urges, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

• Prioritizing God’s presence will cost something—time, comfort, routine—but the reward is nearness to Him.

Keep the Lamp Burning

• “The lamp of God had not yet gone out” (1 Samuel 3:3).

• This seven-branched lampstand was to burn continually (Leviticus 24:2-4), a picture of ongoing devotion.

Revelation 2:5 warns that neglect dims the “lampstand.” Daily worship and Scripture keep the flame bright.

Quiet Hearts Hear Clearly

• In the hush of pre-dawn, Samuel could distinguish God’s voice.

Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”

• Unhurried, screen-free moments create space for the Spirit to speak through His Word.

Serve Faithfully While You Wait

• Verse 1 notes Samuel “ministered to the LORD before Eli.”

Luke 16:10 shows faithfulness in small tasks invites greater trust.

• Ordinary obedience positions us for extraordinary encounters.

Respond Immediately

• When called, Samuel said, “Speak, LORD, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10).

Exodus 33:14 promises, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” Prompt, humble response keeps us aligned with that promise.

Living It Out Today

– Set aside a consistent spot and time to meet with God, guarding it as Samuel guarded the lamp.

– Let Scripture set the agenda; read until a verse captures your heart, then linger.

– Serve in unseen ways—family chores, church tasks, acts of kindness—expecting God to speak amid faithfulness.

– When conviction or guidance comes, obey at once; delayed obedience dulls sensitivity.

In what ways can we ensure we are attentive to God's voice today?
