Spotting & addressing faith disruptors?
How can we identify and confront modern-day "troublemakers" in our faith communities?

Anchoring Verse: Romans 16:17–18

“Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who create divisions and obstacles that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Turn away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.”

Why Troublemakers Matter

• They fracture unity Christ prayed for (John 17:21).

• They distort doctrine and endanger souls (Galatians 1:7–9).

• They lure the spiritually young through charm, not truth (Ephesians 4:14).

Spotting the Patterns

• Division makers—constantly pitting believer against believer.

• Obstacle builders—adding requirements beyond Scripture, undermining liberty in Christ (Colossians 2:20–23).

• Self-servers—motivated by ego, money, or influence rather than Christ’s glory (Philippians 2:21).

• Smooth talkers—rely on charisma instead of clear, faithful exposition of the Word (2 Peter 2:18).

• Secretive operators—work in whispers, private messages, or side-groups to avoid accountability (Jude 1:4).

First Response: Guard Your Doctrine

• Keep personal Bible study vibrant (Acts 17:11).

• Require every teaching to align with “the whole counsel of God” (Acts 20:27).

• Equip leaders and teachers who can “refute those who contradict” (Titus 1:9).

Second Response: Guard Your Fellowship

• Apply the simple directive “Turn away from them” when reconciliation fails (Romans 16:17; cf. Titus 3:10–11).

• Maintain healthy church membership oversight (Hebrews 13:17).

• Cultivate transparent communication so rumors die quickly (Ephesians 4:25).

Third Response: Speak the Truth in Love

• Follow Matthew 18:15–17 for private, then plural, then public confrontation.

• Address motives and falsehoods with gentleness and respect (2 Timothy 2:24–25).

• Offer restoration to the repentant (Galatians 6:1).

Tools for Discernment: Other Scriptures

Proverbs 6:16–19—God hates one who “sows discord among brothers.”

2 Thessalonians 3:6—Keep away from every brother who walks disorderly.

2 John 1:10–11—Do not receive or greet anyone who does not bring the true doctrine.

Jude 1:17–19—Remember the apostolic warnings about mockers following their own ungodly desires.

Practical Steps for Today

• Teach the gospel clearly and often; ambiguity breeds confusion.

• Rotate leadership transparently; secret power-centers invite abuse.

• Encourage questions during studies; honest inquiry exposes error early.

• Foster intergenerational relationships; seasoned believers help spot subtle falsehoods.

• Pray for discernment and courage; confronting is uncomfortable but necessary (James 1:5).
