Stay faithful despite dishonor and criticism?
How can we remain faithful amidst "dishonor" and "bad report" from others?

Setting the Scene

“through glory and dishonor, slander and praise; viewed as imposters, yet genuine” (2 Corinthians 6:8). Paul stands in the middle of two opposite verdicts—honor and dishonor—while remaining unshaken. His experience shows how to stay steady when others label us unfairly.

What Dishonor and Bad Report Feel Like

• Public misrepresentation that stains reputation

• Whisper campaigns or outright lies

• Social exclusion or ridicule for living openly for Christ

Paul does not treat these as mere inconveniences; he lists them alongside physical hardships (vv. 4–10). Scripture treats hostile words as real suffering, yet teaches that we can walk faithfully through them.

Anchoring Our Identity in God’s Verdict

Psalm 27:1—“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”

Proverbs 29:25—“The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is set securely on high.”

Galatians 1:10—“If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

When God’s verdict is final, human verdicts lose their power. We keep serving because His approval outweighs every rumor.

Looking to Christ as Our Model

John 15:18–20—Jesus warned that the world would treat His followers as it treated Him.

Hebrews 12:2—He “endured the cross, scorning its shame.”

Jesus faced false accusations, yet fixed His eyes on the joy set before Him. We mimic His steady focus.

Practical Ways to Remain Faithful

• Guard the heart: Fill mind and mouth with truth instead of replaying insults (Philippians 4:8).

• Maintain integrity: Live so that accusations cannot stick (1 Peter 3:16).

• Speak blessing, not retaliation: “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult” (1 Peter 3:9).

• Stay in fellowship: Isolation magnifies hurt; community strengthens resolve (Hebrews 10:24–25).

• Keep serving: Paul kept preaching, proving the genuineness of his ministry (2 Corinthians 6:3–4).

The Hidden Gain of Slander

Bad reports can:

• Refine motives—forcing us to seek God’s applause alone.

• Showcase the gospel’s power—consistent grace under fire is a living testimony (Matthew 5:16).

• Deepen fellowship with Christ—sharing “the fellowship of His sufferings” (Philippians 3:10).

Encouragement for Today

Believers have always moved forward “through glory and dishonor.” The same Spirit who empowered Paul steadies us now. Honor or shame from others may change tomorrow, but God’s Word stands unchanged, and His servants stand secure.
