Trusting God in life's storms?
How can we trust God during life's storms, as seen in Psalm 89:9?

The Storm Is Loud, but God Is Louder

Psalm 89:9: “You rule the raging sea; when its waves mount up, You still them.”

• Life’s crises feel like roaring surf—health scares, broken relationships, financial shocks.

• Scripture presents those waves as real, not imagined; yet God’s voice overrules their volume.

• The psalmist looks at the sea (a picture of chaos from Genesis 1:2 onward) and confesses, “You rule.”

God’s Sovereign Hand over Chaos

• The verb “rule” in Hebrew pictures an unchallenged reign; His authority is not partial or provisional.

• Even the timing is His: “when its waves mount up” — the precise moment chaos peaks, His command engages.

Job 38:11 echoes this: “Here you may come, but no farther; here your proud waves must stop.”

Why His Authority Matters in My Storm

1. He is Creator (Genesis 1:9–10). The One who spoke oceans into being can certainly speak peace into them.

2. He is Consistent. Psalm 107:29: “He calmed the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.” What He did then, He does now.

3. He is Covenant-Keeper. Psalm 89 sits in a chapter celebrating God’s unbreakable promises to David; His faithfulness to covenant people underwrites His faithfulness to you.

Anchor Points for the Heart

• Recall Past Deliverances

Exodus 14:21–22: waters part on schedule for Israel.

– Personal history: rehearse times He has already calmed your waters.

• Stay under the Word

Romans 10:17 reminds us faith grows by hearing the Word; storms shrink when Scripture grows larger.

• Fix on Christ in the Boat

Mark 4:39: “Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. ‘Silence! Be still!’ And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm.”

– The same voice that stilled Galilee still speaks through His Spirit and Word.

• Practice Steadfast Praise

Psalm 34:1: “I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips.” Praise redirects focus from waves to the Wave-Tamer.

Scriptural Echoes That Reinforce Trust

Isaiah 43:2: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not overwhelm you.”

Nahum 1:3b: “His way is in the whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust beneath His feet.”

Hebrews 6:19: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

Putting Trust into Daily Practice

1. Start each morning by reading a “water” promise (Psalm 89:9; Isaiah 43:2; Mark 4:39).

2. Speak it aloud when anxiety swells; let the spoken Word overtake internal noise.

3. Replace “What if?” thoughts with “Even if…He rules” declarations (Daniel 3:17-18 mindset).

4. Share testimonies of God’s calming work with another believer; mutual remembrance strengthens both hearts.

The Quiet After the Storm

When waves rise, they never rise higher than His throne. Psalm 89:9 invites you to watch the Ruler of sea and circumstance stand up in your situation and speak the word that stills.

What does 'rule the raging sea' reveal about God's authority and sovereignty?
