Truth's role in faithfulness: Jer 28:15?
What role does truth play in maintaining faithfulness, as seen in Jeremiah 28:15?

Setting the Scene

Jeremiah 28 recounts a confrontation between the true prophet Jeremiah and the false prophet Hananiah. Verse 15 forms the turning point:

“Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah, ‘Listen, Hananiah! The LORD has not sent you, but you have persuaded this people to trust in a lie.’”

Truth Versus Lies

• Jeremiah identifies the core issue: whether the people “trust in a lie” or cling to God’s revealed truth.

• Truth originates with the LORD; lies originate wherever God has not spoken (Jeremiah 23:21-22).

• Jesus underlines the same principle centuries later: “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

Consequences of Rejecting Truth

• False assurance: Hananiah promised a quick end to Babylonian captivity, undermining God’s call to repentance (Jeremiah 27:8-11).

• Spiritual drift: “They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:10).

• Divine judgment: Hananiah dies within the year (Jeremiah 28:16-17), illustrating Psalm 119:160—“The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your righteous judgments endure forever.”

Truth as Anchor of Faithfulness

• Guards the heart: “Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.” (Proverbs 30:5)

• Guides obedience: Faithfulness means aligning actions with revealed truth, not popular sentiment (James 1:22).

• Grows maturity: “Speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ.” (Ephesians 4:15)

Living Out Truth Today

1. Stay tethered to Scripture—daily reading keeps us from being “tossed by the waves and carried about by every wind of teaching.” (Ephesians 4:14)

2. Test every message—evaluate sermons, social media posts, and personal impressions against the written Word (Acts 17:11).

3. Hold truth with humility—faithfulness includes correcting others gently when error arises (2 Timothy 2:25).

4. Persevere under pressure—like Jeremiah, remain steady when truth is unpopular, confident that “holding on to faith and a good conscience” prevents shipwreck (1 Timothy 1:19).

Truth, then, is not optional ornamentation to faith; it is the very substance that sustains faithfulness. When truth is embraced, faith stands firm. When truth is discarded, faith unravels—just as it did for Hananiah and those who followed his lie.

How can we apply Jeremiah's boldness in confronting falsehoods in our lives?
