How can we apply Paul's experience to our own spiritual growth? Opening the Text “...or because of these surpassingly great revelations. So to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me.” (2 Corinthians 12:7) Paul’s Thorn: An Unwanted Gift • Paul had seen “surpassingly great revelations,” yet God allowed a persistent, painful limitation. • The thorn remained even after three earnest prayers for removal (v. 8). • God’s answer: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” (v. 9) Why God Left the Thorn • Protection from pride: “to keep me from becoming conceited.” • Ongoing dependence: weakness pressed Paul to rely on Christ’s strength daily. • Display of divine power: the contrast between frail vessel and mighty God made the gospel shine more brightly. Applying Paul’s Experience to Our Growth 1. Expect God to use limitations – Physical, emotional, or circumstantial “thorns” are not accidents but tools in His hand (Romans 8:28). 2. Embrace humility – “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) – When a thorn deflates self-importance, thank Him for the rescue mission. 3. Lean into grace, not self-effort – Grace isn’t a one-time ticket; it’s ongoing strength for each moment (Hebrews 4:16). 4. Redefine strength – True power shows up when we admit weakness and invite Christ to carry us (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). 5. Celebrate Christ’s sufficiency – Every unresolved burden is a stage for Jesus to display His adequacy (Philippians 4:13). 6. Persevere without resentment – Like Paul, keep serving, traveling, writing, loving—thorn and all (Galatians 6:9). Living the Lessons • Start each day acknowledging any “thorn,” then consciously shift focus: “Your grace is sufficient today.” • When tempted to compare your hardship to someone else’s ease, recall Paul’s contentment in weaknesses (v. 10). • Use limitations as conversation starters about Christ’s sustaining power. • Record instances where God’s strength met you at the end of your own. Encouraging Scriptures • Psalm 73:26 — “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” • 1 Peter 5:6-7 — “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand... casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” • Hebrews 12:10-11 — “He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share in His holiness... it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.” When weakness lingers, remember Paul’s testimony: what feels like a thorn is often the very place God’s power becomes unmistakably real. |
