Use talents to serve church today?
How can we use our God-given talents to serve the church today?

Our Starting Point: Exodus 31:5

“to cut gemstones for setting and to carve wood, so that he may craft every kind of artistic design.”

What We See in the Text

• God Himself “filled” Bezalel with skill (vv. 3–5), showing that abilities are gifts, not accidents.

• The skills are practical and artistic—proof that spiritual service isn’t limited to preaching and singing.

• The purpose was the Tabernacle, the visible center of worship. Gifts are meant to build up God’s dwelling place among His people today: the church (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Biblical Principles About Talents

• Every believer receives grace-gifts (1 Peter 4:10).

• Variety is intentional: “There are different gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4).

• Gifts come with a charge: “Use them in proportion to your faith” (Romans 12:6).

Practical Ways to Serve the Church Today

Creative & Artistic Talents

• Visual arts—stage design, sermon graphics, children’s murals.

• Music—worship teams, instrumental instruction for youth.

• Writing—church newsletters, devotionals, web content.

Technical & Craftsman Talents

• Carpentry—building ramps, repairing pews, constructing sets for outreach dramas.

• Technology—sound, livestreaming, website maintenance, cybersecurity.

• Sewing & fabric arts—banners, clothing drives, costumes for Christmas and Easter programs.

Administrative & Leadership Talents

• Project management—coordinating mission trips or VBS logistics.

• Finance—budget oversight, stewardship classes.

• Hospitality coordination—meal trains, event planning.

Relational & Care Talents

• Teaching—Sunday school, small-group facilitation.

• Counseling—biblical guidance, grief support.

• Mercy ministries—visiting shut-ins, hospital prayer teams.

Guardrails for Using Our Talents

• Stay Spirit-filled (Ephesians 5:18); the same Spirit who gives skills must guide their use.

• Aim for edification, not applause (1 Corinthians 14:12).

• Work “heartily, as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23).

• Remain accountable—submit plans to church leadership (Hebrews 13:17).

Encouragement to Step Out

Remember Bezalel: his chisels and hammers became instruments of worship. Whatever talent God has placed in your hands can do the same when offered back to Him.
