What does Job 31:4 mean?
What is the meaning of Job 31:4?

Does He not see my ways

• Job is appealing to God’s omniscience: “The eyes of the LORD are in every place, observing the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3).

• God’s sight is penetrating and personal. Psalm 139:1–3 echoes this certainty: “O LORD, You have searched me and known me… You discern my going out and my lying down.”

• Nothing in Job’s life—or ours—escapes that gaze. Hebrews 4:13 reminds us, “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight; everything is uncovered and exposed before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

• Job states his conviction so confidently because he knows God’s view is flawless, not distorted by rumor or human judgment (1 Samuel 16:7).

and count my every step

• The image shifts from seeing to counting: God not only watches, He tallies. Job had already confessed, “Surely then You would count my steps” (Job 14:16).

• Counting implies precision. Psalm 56:8 says, “You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle.” Every movement, every sorrow, is noted.

• Christ reaffirmed this intimate bookkeeping: “Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matthew 10:30).

• Because the Lord “establishes a man’s steps” (Psalm 37:23), each one matters. Job is certain that if God audits the ledger of his life, the record will show integrity.
