What does riches teach about God?
What does "riches and honor come from You" teach about God's provision?

Setting the Verse in Context

1 Chronicles 29:12: “Both riches and honor come from You, and You are the ruler over all. In Your hand are power and might, and in Your hand to magnify and give strength to all.”

King David is dedicating generous gifts for the future temple and publicly acknowledging that every resource Israel possesses—material and otherwise—originates with God.

Riches and Honor—Directly From God’s Hand

• “Both riches and honor come from You”—wealth and reputation are not random or merely self-earned; they flow from the Lord’s decision to supply them.

• God is the exclusive source, eliminating any notion of luck, fate, or self-made success.

• His provision covers tangible assets (riches) and intangible favor (honor); He meets needs beyond finances—He also exalts, vindicates, and dignifies His people.

God’s Sovereign Ownership Over All

Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof.”

Haggai 2:8: “The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts.”

• Because God owns everything, distributing wealth is a matter of stewardship, not transfer of ownership; we hold His resources in trust.

Provision Tied to Purpose

Deuteronomy 8:18: “But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant.”

• God supplies so that His covenant promises advance—temple construction in David’s day, gospel proclamation in ours.

2 Corinthians 9:11: “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.” Provision is aimed at generosity, ministry, and worship.

Guardrails: Wealth vs. Covetousness

Proverbs 10:22: “The blessing of the LORD enriches, and He adds no sorrow to it.” True provision brings peace, not bondage.

1 Timothy 6:17: “Command those who are rich in this present age not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God.”

• Recognizing riches as God-given frees believers from pride and from anxiety about losing them.

Walking in Gratitude and Stewardship

• Gratitude: Like David, publicly credit the Lord for every promotion, paycheck, and open door.

• Humility: Wealth does not elevate us above others; it magnifies God’s generosity.

• Generosity: Channel resources toward kingdom work—missions, local church, relief of the poor.

• Accountability: Regularly ask, “Am I managing God’s assets in ways that honor Him?”

Living This Truth Today

– Start each financial decision with prayerful acknowledgment that the money belongs to God.

– Budget with missional vision—allocate for giving before spending.

– Celebrate testimonies of God’s provision in family and church gatherings to reinforce dependence on Him.

– Hold reputation loosely; welcome honor as stewardship for influence, not self-promotion.

Riches and honor come from Him; therefore, security, identity, and generosity all flow from trusting the One who provides—and who can abundantly provide again.
