What idols might we need to "cast away" in today's society? Our Foundational Verse “ ‘Each of you must cast away the vile images set before your eyes and not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.’ ” (Ezekiel 20:7) Why Idolatry Is Still a Threat • God’s first command: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3) • Jesus warns, “No one can serve two masters.” (Matthew 6:24) • The apostles plead, “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21) Anything that competes for the affection, trust, or obedience that belongs to the Lord alone is an idol, whether physical, digital, or internal. Obvious Modern Idols • Money, investments, career status • Possessions—homes, cars, fashion, gadgets • Entertainment—sports, movies, streaming, gaming • Celebrity culture—musicians, actors, influencers • Sexual immorality and pornography • Substance abuse—alcohol, drugs, vaping • False spiritualities—horoscopes, crystals, occult practices Cultural and Ideological Idols • Political parties, platforms, or national pride elevated above the kingdom of God • “Science says” used as an unchallengeable authority over Scripture • Personal autonomy and individual rights treated as supreme • Social causes pursued for self-glory rather than God’s glory • The myth of perpetual youth and fitness worship Subtle Heart-Level Idols • Comfort and ease—avoiding any sacrifice for Christ • Achievement—grades, titles, follower counts • Relationships—spouse, children, friends placed above obedience to God • Approval—living for likes, compliments, or professional recognition • Control—refusing to trust God’s sovereignty over plans and outcomes Practical Steps to Cast Them Away • Examine: ask the Spirit to reveal anything rivaling the Lord (Psalm 139:23-24). • Confess: agree with God that the idol is sin (1 John 1:9). • Remove: delete apps, cancel subscriptions, clear closets—whatever helps sever the tie (Acts 19:19). • Replace: fill the vacuum with Scripture, worship, service, and fellowship (Colossians 3:16). • Steward, don’t serve: hold gifts loosely, using them for God’s purposes (1 Timothy 6:17-19). • Stay accountable: invite trusted believers to ask hard questions (Hebrews 10:24-25). Living Free from Idols “Turn to God from idols to serve the living and true God.” (1 Thessalonians 1:9) The Lord who commands us to cast idols away also supplies grace to keep hearts single toward Him. As we continually surrender every rival, we enjoy deeper fellowship with the One our souls were made to love. |
