What is being taught God's way?
What does it mean to be "instructed in the way of the Lord"?

Setting the Scene

Acts 18:25 introduces Apollos: “He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.” This simple statement opens a window into what it means to be shaped, trained, and guided by God’s own path.

Defining “the Way of the Lord”

• An established path—God’s revealed manner of life (Isaiah 35:8).

• A narrow, life-giving road that contrasts with the broad way of destruction (Matthew 7:13-14).

• A Christ-centered journey; Jesus calls Himself “the way” (John 14:6).

• A path marked by holiness, truth, and obedience (Psalm 25:8-9).

What “Instructed” Implies

• Careful teaching—Apollos had been catechized, not casually informed.

• Ongoing discipleship—verb tense suggests a process, not a one-time event (cf. Proverbs 22:6).

• Submission to authority—he placed himself under reliable teachers (2 Timothy 2:2).

• Heart engagement—“fervor” in Acts 18:25 shows instruction reached his affections, not just intellect.

Marks of Those Instructed in the Way

1. Accurate doctrine

– Apollos “taught about Jesus accurately” (Acts 18:25).

– Truth guards against error (Ephesians 4:14).

2. Zeal that flows from truth

– “Great fervor” (Acts 18:25).

– Word-fueled passion, not empty emotion (Jeremiah 20:9).

3. Humility to keep learning

– He accepted further correction from Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:26).

4. Fruitful witness

– His instruction equipped him to “vigorously refute the Jews in public debate” (Acts 18:28).

How God Instructs Today

• Scripture—primary curriculum (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

• The Holy Spirit—our internal Teacher (John 14:26).

• Faithful believers—parents, pastors, mentors (Ephesians 4:11-12).

• Life’s providences—trials and blessings that reinforce lessons (James 1:2-4).

Living It Out

• Open the Word daily; let God “teach me Your paths” (Psalm 25:4).

• Lean into church community; receive and give instruction (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Measure zeal by truth; cultivate both.

• Stay teachable, like Apollos—correction is part of God’s curriculum (Proverbs 12:1).
