What does it mean to "continually say, 'The LORD be magnified'"?

Psalm 70:4 declares, “May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation always say, ‘Let God be exalted!’” The phrase “continually say, ‘The LORD be magnified’” carries several layers of meaning that work together.

1. It calls for an unending attitude of praise. “Continually” points to a lifestyle, not a moment. Psalm 145:2 echoes this: “Every day I will bless You and praise Your name forever and ever.” Whether in private prayer, corporate worship, or daily conversation, hearts and lips stay tuned to God’s greatness.

2. It is verbal and visible. The psalm envisions actual speech—spoken or sung words that exalt God. Yet Scripture shows that actions speak as loudly as words. Colossians 3:17 urges, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” A life that reflects His character magnifies Him just as surely as voiced praise.

3. It arises from people “who love Your salvation.” Gratitude for deliverance fuels the desire to exalt God. Luke 1:46–47 models this response: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Remembered rescue becomes continual worship.

4. It proclaims God’s greatness to others. “Magnify” means “make great” in the sense of making His greatness known. Psalm 34:3 invites, “Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.” Praising God openly invites fellow believers and unbelievers alike to see and honor Him.

5. It aligns with obedience. David says in Psalm 69:30, “I will praise God’s name in song and magnify Him with thanksgiving.” True thanksgiving produces trust and obedience; living by His commands shows that He is truly great in our estimation (John 14:15).

6. It strengthens joy and hope. Focusing on the Lord’s greatness lifts eyes above circumstances. Psalm 40:16 links gladness with praise: “May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; may those who love Your salvation continually say, ‘The LORD be magnified!’”

Taken together, continually saying “The LORD be magnified” means cultivating a heart and tongue that never tire of declaring God’s greatness, demonstrating His worth through obedient living, and inviting everyone around to see and celebrate the majesty of the One who saves.
