What modern idols might we be "worshiping and serving" instead of God? Setting the Stage Romans 1:25: “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise. Amen.” The danger Paul described is alive and well; the objects have simply updated their packaging. What Is an Idol? • Anything—good or bad—that claims the loyalty, love, or trust that belongs to the Lord alone (Exodus 20:3; 1 John 5:21). • It begins in the heart (Ezekiel 14:3) and shows up in what we pursue, protect, and praise. Spotting Today’s Idols • Wealth & Possessions – Matthew 6:24: “You cannot serve God and money.” – The pursuit of “more” can quietly become our master. • Career & Achievement – Ecclesiastes 2:11 reminds us that labor without God proves meaningless. – Promotions and accolades promise significance but cannot deliver eternal worth. • Technology & Screens – Psalm 101:3: “I will set no worthless thing before my eyes.” – Endless scrolling, gaming, and streaming steal devotion, time, and affection. • Entertainment & Pleasure – 2 Timothy 3:4 warns of people “lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.” – When amusement eclipses worship, fun has become a false god. • Self & Personal Brand – 2 Timothy 3:2: “People will be lovers of self.” – Curating an image, chasing likes, obsessing over appearance centers life on “me.” • Relationships & Family – Luke 14:26 shows Christ must come first, even over loved ones. – Spouse, children, or friends can occupy the throne if we let them. • Comfort & Safety – Philippians 3:19 speaks of those “whose god is their stomach.” – Avoiding risk, hardship, or discomfort can mute obedience and sacrifice. • Success & Productivity – Psalm 127:1: “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain.” – A full planner and impressive résumé can masquerade as spiritual fruit. • Politics & Ideology – Psalm 146:3: “Do not put your trust in princes.” – When policy or party receives our hope and zeal, we’ve traded Watchman for platform. • Health & Fitness – 1 Timothy 4:8: “Physical training is of some value, but godliness is valuable for everything.” – Good stewardship of the body slips into idolatry when physique defines identity. The Heart Behind Modern Idolatry • Substituting the Giver for His gifts (James 1:17). • Trusting what we can see, count, or control instead of the unseen yet faithful God (2 Corinthians 4:18). • Seeking satisfaction apart from the “spring of living water” and digging “broken cisterns” that cannot hold it (Jeremiah 2:13). Returning to the True Worship • Repent—turn from the idol to the Lord (Acts 3:19). • Replace—fill the vacuum with Scripture, prayer, service, and gratitude (Colossians 3:16-17). • Re-align—daily declare, “You, Lord, are my portion” (Psalm 16:5). • Remember—idols promise everything and deliver nothing; Christ promises Himself and delivers everything (John 6:35; 2 Peter 1:3). |
